V.com weekend vote: Did you start with Suzuki, or another method? - Violinist.com

pret.indah.link

October 31, 2020, 11:14 AM · This week we featured a wonderful interview with violin superstar Hilary Hahn, who talked extensively about her own beginnings with the Suzuki method and her thoughts about it, having recently recorded the first three books for use by current students and teachers.

Suzuki

A lot of famous and accomplished violinists had their start in the Suzuki method - besides Hilary, there is Ray Chen, Sarah Chang, Benjamin Beilman, Rachel Podger, Jennifer Koh, Anne Akiko Meyers, Leila Josefowicz, Nick Kendall, Brian Lewis, Tai Murray, William Hagen, Melissa White, Timothy Chooi, Danielle Belen, Stephen Waarts....this is a very long list.

I did not start violin with the Suzuki method - I started at my public school and studied with a traditional teacher before finding my way to James Maurer, whose wife Jackie actually a very active Suzuki teacher at the time. Both later became involved in Suzuki, visiting Japan and meeting Shinichi Suzuki. I wound up coming returning years later and studying Suzuki pedagogy training with Mr. Maurer!

So while I had a very traditional training, I was exposed to the method from an early age, while not being a part of it as a child.

Did you start your instrument with the Suzuki method, or with another method? How did you get your start, and what kinds of methods were you exposed to along the way? Please participate in the vote, and then tell us your story!

Here's how you can win a masterclass with Steve White, a Yamaha EAD10 and a Recording Custom snare - MusicRadar

pret.indah.link

Steve White is a living legend within the UK drum industry. Having played with Style Council and Paul Weller for decades, as well as becoming an ambassador for drumming through education and his The Art Of Drumming series, Steve is now focussing on teaching and his other musical projects.

One such project of Steve's, Hague & White has just released its latest single, Running, and now thanks to the band, Yamaha and Steve you have a chance to bag yourself an impressive bundle of prizes.

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning a one-on-one masterclass with Steve, a Yamaha Recording Custom brass snare drum and a Yamaha EAD10 Electronic Acoustic Drum Module is upload a video of yourself playing along to all or part of Running by Hague and White.

Yamaha is hosting a drum-less version of the song (with click) for you to jam with, and they've even included the score too. However, if you don't read music or fancy doing your own thing over the song then don't worry, the competition isn't being judged on accuracy against the original. So stay as faithful or as far away from Steve's recorded part as you like!

The competition closes on December 11, so you have a good few weeks to get your ideas together. Here's exactly what you need to do:

  • Download the drum-less backing track for Running by Hague and White here

  • Film yourself playing (max upload size, 50mb)
  • Visit the Yamaha website and upload your details and video - you can also link to your video if it's hosted on YouTube/Facebook/Instagram

Honda Pulls Mario Andretti From Driving the Two-Seater IndyCar, and We Had the Last Ride - The Drive

pret.indah.link

Mario Andretti is no longer driving the fastest seat in sports. We took the very last ride with him.

mario andretti two seater indycar
Howard Walker

Lady Gaga, Channing Tatum, Nick Cannon, Mark Wahlberg and Julian Edelman have all sat where my substantial rear was parked on October 25: In Mario Andretti’s famous two-person Honda IndyCar, long marketed as the Fastest Seat in Sports. Andretti's been giving these thrill rides to lucky fans and VIPs for the better part of a decade. But the iconic racer, who turns 81 in February, has formally been removed from the driver's seat by Honda.

And somehow, the fates aligned to put me in the car for his very last drive.

Why is this happening? Honda declined to comment, but “81 in February” may have something to do with it, liability- and insurance-wise. Regardless, I have never been so polite in a line as I was last Sunday, when it was, “No, you go ahead,” as I drifted to the rear of the line of 20 or so queued up at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix at 7 a.m. race morning, paperwork (a lot of paperwork) in hand.

Eventually, it was time for the last and final person: me. I’d suited up 90 minutes earlier, and not one kid asked me for my autograph, if that tells you something about how I look in a fire suit. I was herded into the car—this thing moves like a synthetic-oiled machine—and I was strapped in, the crew started the engine, and Andretti roared off.

Deborah Van Valin

As you likely know, the St. Pete street course is rough and tight and the walls come at you so fast that...wow. You’d never know the man driving had 60 years on some of the competitors who’d race later that day. It's not like you can have a conversation or, you know, even see the other person's face in a two-seat IndyCar, but watching and feeling the car react to his preternatural inputs was its own form of communication. Mario told me later he had been at about 85 percent, which was good for 165 mph on the main straight of the race track, the runway for Albert Whitted Airport.

Then hard on the brakes, back to the pits. Unbuckled, as did Andretti, and we spoke for a while.

“Though the ‘Fastest Seat’ doesn’t necessarily give you a feel for the racing, I hope it gave you a feel for what it’s like out there, to be in the middle of 20 other cars. It’s pretty authentic,” Andretti said.

It’s a wonderful way to showcase our sport,” he said. “Our sport is very non-participant. You can go to a driving school, and you’re driving 15 percent. I know, I had one. Then they lie on the speeds. Here, we can reliably run at 80 or 85 percent, and hopefully you come away with an appreciation of what our racers do. That’s the reason I do this. Because I love it.”

Deborah Van Valin

Indeed, it isn’t that hard to imagine what a single car can do on the track. But on-the-edge racing for 100 laps – anybody want to argue again that these aren’t athletes?

Mario Andretti sure as hell is. Fifty-two IndyCar wins and four championships; the Daytona 500, the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb, and the Formula 1 championship – the last American to win an F1 race (a good trivia question, the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix). At that moment last Sunday, neither of us knew it would be his last time inviting some mope like me along for the ride in the sport that made him. To think about it now, another abrupt ending in a year of abrupt endings, is sad and poignant all at once.

I’m old and seldom awed. But Mario Andretti, one of the nicest people in racing, has awed me for decades. And hopefully will for a decade or two more.

2021 Honda Passport, Pilot have arrived at local dealership in Bluffton, South Carolina

BLUFFTON, S.C. (PRWEB) October 31, 2020

The car-shopping experience has never been a very simple one. Some of that headache has been relieved by automotive dealerships' websites in recent memory. For example, residents of the Hilton Head area have been able to find all of the information they need when deciding on which vehicle would be right for them courtesy of the Hilton Head Honda website, http://www.hiltonheadhonda.com.

The dealership provides many informative and comparative model research pages on its website, all in one location that's easy for shoppers to navigate. Some of these pages go into detail about each of the vehicles available at the dealership, while others pit those vehicles against some of their biggest competitors.

As the 2021 model year kicks off, staff at the dealership has begun adding new pages focused on the new vehicles arriving. Both the 2021 Honda Passport and 2021 Honda Pilot have already arrived at the dealership's showroom in Bluffton. These different-sized crossover utility vehicles meet the needs of many different types of drivers, so potential car buyers unsure of which vehicle might be right for them can get the details they need right on these pages.

Residents of the area that might be interested in learning more about the 2021 Passport or Pilot can find all of this information and much more right on the dealership's website. Specific questions about either vehicle can instead be directed to the sales staff at 833-331-0238. Hilton Head Honda is located at 161 Fording Island Rd. in Bluffton.

Yamaha “not giving up” on top speed despite engine freeze - Motorsport

pret.indah.link

As part of COVID-19 cost-saving measures, all manufacturers (except KTM, which has been granted special dispensation to develop its engine after losing its concessions for next season) will have to start the 2021 campaign on their current engines, with all but Aprilia unable to develop their motors for the rest of the year.

Yamaha has typically been the slowest manufacturer in a straightline this season, with its deficit to the fastest bike – usually a Ducati – in the speed traps at some circuits exceeding 10km/h.

All Yamaha riders have also been forced to run slightly reduced revs following early-season issues with its engines at Jerez – later found to be the result of a faulty batch of valves from a secondary supplier.

The engine development freeze looks likely to impact Yamaha the hardest in 2021, but Sumi says the marque “can find another way” to gain speed, while admitting it will have to develop the M1’s strong points “even more than before”.

“We have to develop even more than before to improve our strong points,” Sumi said when asked how the engine freeze will affect Yamaha.

“Unfortunately now, the corner speed and handling is not only [the strong point] of the Yamaha.

“We are aware the competitors improved a lot in this area, especially Suzuki. So, we have to make more effort for that.

“Also, we are not giving up on improving the top speed for next year. Of course, the engine is frozen for next year, but the engine is one element, but we can find another way to improve for next year.”

Read Also:

Yamaha trialled a new exhaust at the post-San Marino Grand Prix test in a bid to find speed, though this was abandoned after the Emilia Romagna GP.

It has also been working on its own version of the ride height adjuster Ducati has been using for some time, though it still needs refining.

Despite its issues this year, Yamaha has won six races courtesy of Fabio Quartararo, Franco Morbidelli and Maverick Vinales - with all three in the title fight - and Sumi has “confidence” the M1 is developing in the right direction.

“Honestly, not super [satisfied about the M1’s performance], but I’m happy about our performance in general,” he added.

“Last year, we were fast in free practice and qualifying, but not so in the race.

“This is a point we wanted to improve for this year. Top speed was one of the main topics to improve, and we got some more compared to last year.

“But unfortunately, the competitors did well also, so the situation is not so much different than we expected.

“Now we have three races winners in Yamaha, and Valentino [Rossi] also got back his feeling and speed.

“So, now all four Yamahas are ready to fight for the win. So, as a total package we have confidence we are in the right direction, but still a lot of work to do to be on the target point.”

Retro-inspired Yamaha BW’S is giving off some cool go-anywhere scooter vibes - Visordown

pret.indah.link

Feast your eyes on the Yamaha BW’S, a new rugged version for the Iwata marque’s venerable scooter range that has just received its debut in - for now at least - Taiwan.

Yamaha’s immensely popular scooter range in Europe needs little introduction but you may need a bit of a reminder when it comes to the BW, a more rugged go-anywhere version of its ubiquitous runarounds.

Launched back in the 1980s, the Yamaha BW200 - ‘BW’ standing for ‘Big Wheel’ - was exactly that, a big wheeled, dual purpose dirt bike intended to give the flexibility of a scooter with the go-anywhere ability of an off-roader.

Yamaha MT-09 - Everything you need to know...

The name has continued to live on in various forms ever since, though you’ll need to look hard to track one down with a brief Google search revealing a Yamaha BW Naked from 2016 available on the Russian-arm of Yamaha’s model range site where its big tyres and stripped back design are, we assume, more ideal for potentially more challenging terrain. The Yamaha Zuma sold in the US is also a successor the BW line.

Fast-forward to now and we have the Yamaha BW’S which evokes BW’s of yore with dual headlamps and utilitarian finish giving it a convincing appearance as a - what Yamaha dubs - ‘Wild Survivor’.

While the reality might be less Bear Grylls and more camping in the back garden with its 12-inch wheels and 125cc engine, there is certainly a market for something that at least looks a bit tougher judging by the success of the machine the Yamaha BW’S will be targeting, the Honda ADV 150.

Whether the Yamaha BW’S escapes Taiwan remains to be seen but we can imagine there are those out there that wouldn’t mind a faux-adventure scooter that looks capable of scaling more than the odd kerb.

The best soundbar for 2020: Vizio, Sonos, Polk, Yamaha, Roku and more - CNET

pret.indah.link

Soundbars are affordable, a breeze to set up, and offer much improved sound quality over a standard built-in TV speaker. This is what makes them more popular these days than home theater speakersubwoofer and AV receiver packages. With a multitude of choices available, finding the best soundbar can be hard, but this best soundbar guide can help you cut through the noise.

To test the sound quality of each soundbar listed below, we played both music and movies in our audio lab. We also took into account features such as the number of HDMI ports and whether the soundbar features high-resolution audioBluetooth, surround sound or Dolby Atmos. From solid bare-bones 'bars to Alexa-powered smart speakers, this is CNET's lineup of the best soundbars available at multiple feature levels and prices.

This list is updated regularly as new products become available and are tested.

Read moreSoundbar buyer's guide for 2020

Ty Pendlebury/CNET

If you're looking to ditch your TV speakers, this is where we suggest you start. Our long-time favorite, the Vizio SB3621n-E8 has essentially been replaced by the V21. The subwoofer may be smaller on the newer model but this bar still sounds great, as well as offering HDMI connectivity and a much easier to understand input display. This is the best soundbar value we've tested in 2020. Read our Vizio V21 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

If your price range is limited, for less than a C-note, the Creative Stage soundbar offers a bunch of previously unheard-of features, including HDMI connectivity and a subwoofer. But what's even more remarkable is that it sounds better than most of its ultrabudget competition, with a wired subwoofer that fills the room with great bass. A variety of modes makes this a great soundbar speaker for music, concerts and gaming. Excellent sound quality for gamers and movie fans alike. Read our Creative Stage review.

Ty Pendlebury/CNET

While it may not have much in the way of features compared to some competitors, the one thing the JBL Bar 2.1 Deep Bass does have is also the most desirous: sound quality. The JBL comes with a large subwoofer that goes just as deep as it claims while adding a real sense of dynamics lacking from cheaper 'bars. If you want to make your TV the next best thing to a cinema, this is one of the most affordable ways to do it.  Read our JBL Bar 2.1 Deep Bass review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The Yamaha YAS-209 offers excellent sound quality in a compact soundbar. The addition of Amazon Alexa is useful, allowing this voice control smart soundbar to stream music, and the mics work well in loud environments. The soundbar's implementation of DTS Virtual:X offers a rich effect reminiscent of surround speakers. The wireless subwoofer is more articulate and offers more headroom than the competing, and also excellent, Polk Command Bar. However, the YAS-209 doesn't use the company's MusicCast system, so it won't sync up with other Yamaha speakers. Read our Yamaha YAS-209 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The Vizio SB36512-F6 proves you don't need to spend a ton to get a high-quality soundbar that can handle the latest Dolby Atmos soundtracks and get multiroom sound. The Vizio SB36512-F6 is a full 5.1.2 immersive sound system for the price of an AV receiver, and its height channels do a solid job of bringing out Atmos effects. You can also stream music from any Google Chromecast-enabled audio app, like Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio and Google Play Music. Read our Vizio SB36512-F6 review.

Ty Pendlebury/CNET

If you're interested in setting up a multiroom sound system, a Sonos soundbar system is still the best option. The Sonos Arc is the company's best soundbar and includes Dolby Atmos playback, a class-leading music ecosystem, and a choice of both Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa built into the bar itself. The soundbar system sounds good with music and movies, and adding a pair of Ikea Symphonisk bookshelves should really boost your home theater sound experience. The Arc sounds a lot bigger than the cheaper Beam, which needs the $700 subwoofer on top to make it comparable in terms of sound.

Sarah Tew/CNET

If you simply must have the fewest number of boxes and remotes in your living space and yet demand the best Atmos quality sound performance you can get, this Sennheiser speaker is your guy. It's a single unit, without a subwoofer, but it's able to conjure up the most realistic overhead and true surround sound effects we've ever heard. It's also controlled entirely via remote control. It's not a cheap piece of sound equipment but it's comparable in price to a full set of surround speakers without the bulk and with 85% of the great sound and performance. Read our Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar review.

Also consider

Ty Pendlebury/CNET

If you're looking for a speaker that can do music as well as play the latest episode of Ted Lasso, then the Polk Signa S3 has a lot to offer. It's great for streaming, as it has Chromecast built-in in addition to Bluetooth and an HDMI input. Read our Polk Signa S3 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

While we really like the Roku Smart Soundbar, the Roku Streambar does essentially the same job for $50 less. With a full-fledged 4K HDR Roku streamer built in and a single voice remote controlling everything, this bar gives you audio and video in one simple bar. Setup is a breeze; just add to a TV with a simple HDMI connection. Sound quality was acceptable for the size and price, and you can add a $129 wireless subwoofer for more punch. Read our Roku Streambar review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

If you're looking for a single bar that's even cheaper than the Sonos Arc, the Zvox SB500 is a great option for people who still prize sound quality. This speaker offers multiple sound mode options, tighter bass and better sound than most other single-speaker options. While it may lack the Sonos' Wi-Fi streaming the Zvox still includes Bluetooth connectivity for streaming audio from your phone or tablet. Read our Zvox SB500 review.

Maruti Suzuki cautious about possible fall in urban demand post festive period - HT Auto

pret.indah.link

Maruti Suzuki has been riding positive sales sentiments post lockdown days and has managed to register a decent performance, especially in the ongoing festive period. The country's largest car maker, however, is also cautious about the prospects of sales dwindling post the festive period and as a challenging calendar year draws to an end.

Maruti Suzuki earlier this week reported a 1% rise in net profit from a year ago to 1,371.6 crore in the September quarter. Driving the prospects in the quarter were easing of restrictions, pent-up demand and an expected surge in demand owing to the festive period. The path beyond, however, may not be a bed of roses. "People willing to buy cars for personal mobilitiy and during the festivities may be over by December. I am not sure how much demand from urban areas will be," said MSI Chairman R C Bhargava during the course of a virtual press conference. "I don't expect strong urban demand after the festivals as people can’t afford vehicles even if they want to buy them."

What may have helped Maruti thus far is its robust presence in the small and hatchback segment. With economic uncertainties and shrinking incomes, people may have shown an increased preference for more affordable cars from well established brands with solid post-sales network.

And while many feel rural demand could maintain most of its momentum, the demand from urban centers towards the end of November may begin to dwindle.

Interestingly, the pre-owned vehicle segment has also been getting some notable traction because, say many, the need for personal mobility will remain omnipresent till the time a vaccine for Covid-19 is taken out on a mass commercial scale.

While Maruti has a strong presence in the pre-owned segment as well, the company also recently rolled out its subscription packages which negate the need for committing to a large investment of actually buying a new vehicle.

RIDING THE 2021 YAMAHA YZ250F: THE WRAP - Dirt Bike Magazine

pret.indah.link

If you watched any of the 2020 Lucas Oil Pro motocross series, you probably think that the Yamaha YZ250F is the all-time horsepower king of the 250 class. That’s clearly true of the bikes ridden by Dylan Ferrandis, Justin Cooper and the other Star Racing/Monster Energy team members, but on the production level it’s a different story. The Yamaha has a history of being torquey and easy to ride, but not especially fast. We weren’t sure if that was going to change for 2021. The bike looks virtually identical to the 2020 version, but Yamaha was hinting about significant internal changes.

The 2021 Yamaha YZ250F weighs 227 without fuel on Dirt Bike’s digital scale.

Yamaha’s valve train is a little old-school. It still uses double overhead cam positioned directly over the valve buckets, whereas Honda, KTM, Husqvarna and Kawasaki all use finger followers for additional leverage to open the valves. Engine tuners say that finger followers are especially beneficial for peak power. Still, the Star bikes are so fast we can’t say that the cam-over-bucket design is dead. The 2021 YZ250 has very few changes in the valve train aside from the exhaust cam. Most of the emphasis has been in improving airflow into the motor. The intake port has been reshaped, the Mikuni throttle body is larger, the air boot was reshaped and the airbox lid is vented. On the other side, the exhaust system was redesigned with a longer canister. The ECU has a new curve. There have also been durability changes to the cam chain, cam chain tensioner, gearbox, clutch basket and water pump.

On our second day of testing, Pete Murray synced with the YZ250F perfectly.

The Yamaha’s chassis got some invisible changes in construction, which were introduced on the YZ450F in 2020. The engine top mounts were changed from aluminum to steel, while the front mounts were changed from steel to aluminum. The triple clamps are said to be less rigid while the front axle is larger, and presumably more rigid. All this is aimed at making the chassis more compliant in some planes and stiffer in others. Other changes include a beefed up front brake, a smaller rear brake rotor and new suspension valving.

Mark Tilley loved the rev map provided by Yamaha’s testing crew.

On the track, the basic personality of the YZ250F is pretty much the same. It’s a fun bike to ride and it still produces the best low-end power in the class. This is real-world torque, too; not just dyno torque. Okay, let me explain the difference: On the dyno, the throttle is always wide open, even when measuring the low-rpm ranges. On the track, the throttle is rarely pinned to the stop. Even the best riders operate in the half the three-quarter range, and that’s where the Yamaha shines. This year, that hasn’t changed at all. The biggest difference is in the upper reaches, where the bike is clearly stronger. We had a 2020 version on hand for direct back-to-back comparison. The difference isn’t stunning, just noticeable. We always look forward to the maps that the Yamaha testing department comes up with each year. We have tried to do better ourselves, but Steve Butler, Stevie Tokarski and Travis  Preston are really good at what they do. Their rev map this year was a hands-down winner. Still, don’t expect miracles. The differences from map to map just aren’t that world shaking. We’re just happy that such changes are possible.

Yamaha testing department’s over rev map.

Where does the new Yamaha sit in the world order? Things haven’t changed much, aside from the arrival of the new Kawasaki. If you are a screamer, you’ll get more out of the Kawasaki, Honda, KTM and Husky. If you’re more of a throttle-control type of guy, you’ll love the Yamaha. It helps that the front brake is stronger than ever this year and the suspension is once again excellent. We will continue testing all month and have a full story in the February, 2021 print edition of Dirt Bike.

See you next week!
