MARIETTA, Ga., March 31, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, today announces the completion of the 2020 Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative (OAI) grant cycle with funding decisions for the fourth quarter. In total, Yamaha granted more than $350,000 in 2020 while supplying essential support to public lands providing vital access to outdoor recreation across the country. The Yamaha OAI program continues to lead the powersports industry in providing direct monetary support to grassroots efforts helping to protect, expand, and improve entry to public spaces off-road for motorized recreation.

“The pressure on public lands during the pandemic has been enormous due to people finding solace outdoors. Their adventures gave off-road enthusiasts a much-needed breather from the stress we’ve all experienced over the past year,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s Motorsports marketing manager. “Public land belongs to everyone and we all have a responsibility to take care of it. Yamaha is proud to continue supporting our riders’ favorite outdoor activities, including OHV riding, hunting, camping and fishing, through the Outdoor Access Initiative.”

The fourth quarter 2020 Yamaha OAI grants totaling more than $90,000 were awarded to the following organizations:

Blue Ribbon Coalition – Pocatello, ID
East Branch Sno-Rovers & ATV Club – Medway, Maine
Idaho Single Track Alliance – Idaho Falls, ID
Reno Area Dirtriders – Reno, NV
Swampsiders Snowmobile Club – Bigfork, MN

“The need for funding and leadership for public lands increased exponentially in 2020 with more people engaging in outdoor recreation at the same time resources were being restricted. It was a relief to know we could reach out to Yamaha to help,” said Ben Burr from the Blue Ribbon Coalition, which received $11,740 to develop a trail guide for Utah’s San Rafael Desert area to help visitors explore safely and responsibly. “The Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative is a trusted resource for the outdoor recreation community with a history of putting the funds where they are needed to make big improvements on the ground.”

“The 2020 fourth quarter grant projects spanned the spectrum of powersports, with funds going to groups from all categories of Yamaha’s off-highway vehicles: Motorcycles, ATVs, Side-by-Sides, and snowmobiles,” continued Nessl. “We prioritize those projects meeting the needs of diverse OHV riders to support their local riding communities.”

For more than 12 years, Yamaha has issued quarterly grants to non-profit organizations supporting the needs of riding groups, outdoor enthusiasts, land stewardship organizations, and public land managers to improve access to public land for outdoor recreation. Since inception, Yamaha contributed over $4.5 million in aid to more than 380 projects across the nation.

The deadline for submission to the second quarter 2021 funding cycle for the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative is June 30, 2021, and applications must be postmarked by then. Submission guidelines and applications are available at YamahaOAI.com. About the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative
For more than a decade, the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative has led the Powersports industry in guaranteeing responsible access to our nation’s land for outdoor enthusiasts. Through this program, Yamaha has directly and indirectly supported thousands of miles of motorized recreation trails, maintained and rehabilitated riding and hunting areas, improved staging areas, supplied agricultural organizations with essential OHV safety education, built bridges over fish-bearing streams and partnered with local outdoor enthusiast communities across the country to improve access to public lands. Each quarter, Yamaha accepts applications from nonprofit or tax-exempt organizations including OHV riding clubs and associations, national, state and local public land use agencies, outdoor enthusiast associations and land conservation groups with an interest in protecting, improving, expanding and/or maintaining access for safe, responsible and sustainable public use. A committee then reviews each application and awards grants to deserving projects. Examples of appropriate projects for grants include, but are not limited to:

  • Trail development, restoration and maintenance

  • Trail signage and map production

  • Staging area construction, renovation and maintenance

  • Land stewardship, safety and education

With the influx of new boaters worldwide over the past year, Yamaha Marine is making the sport more accessible through a video series, the company announced.

Hosted by Yamaha Pro Tyler Anderson, Yamaha’s Boating Academy intends to give novice boaters basic tips while emphasizing the importance of safety on the water. Topics covered include boating etiquette, driving 101 and boat ramp procedures.

“There are many new boaters on the water. Now is the perfect time to provide them with basic tips and safety information that will keep everyone safe during the high season,” said Dale Barnes, marketing division manager of Yamaha Marine Engine Systems.

“Many new boat owners are afraid to ask basic questions, but without this kind of fundamental knowledge, experiences on the water can become stressful or even dangerous,” said Anderson. “The Yamaha Boating Academy aims to equip novice boaters with the information they need to really enjoy their boats.”

MotoGP, Vinales: Fighting with the other riders on the Yamaha is what I love - GPone English

pret.indah.link

Yamaha won the opening round of the 2021 MotoGP championship in Losail last weekend with Maverick Vinales, but the time for celebration is already over. Just as happened last year in Jerez to Fabio Quartararo, now Vinales' teammate in the factory Yamaha team, the bikes will be back on track this Friday for the second GP of the season, always on the same track. The mission for Vinales is now to confirm his form, something that Quartararo did last year.

“I am looking forward to this weekend – said the Spanish rider - Winning the first race was great, but even more important to me was the feeling I had with the bike – that’s what I’m most happy about. I was able to fight with other riders, which is what we all love and what makes racing exciting. We need to make sure that we keep this feeling going and improve further, especially on the starts. We know our competition won’t be sitting still, so we will also be pushing.”

On the opposite side of the garage is Fabio Quartararo who finished his debut race with the factory Yamaha team in fifth position behind Mir's Suzuki and ahead of Rins. The Frenchman complained of too much drop in the tyres and now he will have to work to make sure that doesn't happen again and keep up with his teammate.

“I am looking forward to the second race at Losail, because it’s a second chance – said Fabio - Last Sunday, I was feeling so strong in the beginning of the race, but a big drop in the rear tyre ended my chances to fight for the podium. Fifth place isn’t bad, but I think we can do better. We are analysing the data now to see how we can improve for this Sunday’s race. I’m excited to start riding again!”

1990 Honda Civic Si Turbo Packs 660 HP, All-Wheel-Drive - Motor Trend

pret.indah.link

How did we get to the point at which a 660-horsepower, all-wheel-drive 1990 Honda Civic Si is not only a possibility but an honest street driven reality? Chalk it up to a few different things. The first is Honda's unrivaled cross-chassis compatibility. The same compatibility that fueled an early '90s engine swap phenomenon which continues to thrive to this day also contributes to the notorious theft rate related to just about any popular Honda model of yesteryear. The other factor is plain old homegrown ingenuity and a knack for figuring out how to make various parts work with one another that the DIY crowd relishes.

DIY Done Right

You can add Brandon Smith, owner of this 1990 Si, to that group of die-hards that tinker and test, wrench, and repeat until they find exactly what they're looking for. He's built and re-built this chassis multiple times and its current iteration is by far the most impressive. Clean and simple on the outside, it features an obsessively well-organized engine bay that plays host to a mix of custom and off-the-shelf performance parts that look better suited for competitive drag racing than your local freeway. But make no mistake, this car is a driver.

Smith and his hatchback joined forces back in 2007,  and he wasted absolutely no time in ripping out its native single-cam heart to make room for a ZC swap (an engine with the same 1.6-liter displacement but with dual overhead cams). Not long after would come his turbo kit and around 300 hp, and for the next four years, the Civic served as his daily driver and weekend warrior. That initial taste of boost was just the beginning, and since that time he's gone through 10 different engine configurations, all turbocharged, with the exception of a supercharger set up that would net just over 300 hp. With experience and knowledge gained over the years, things got rather serious and his long-term Civic eventually hit the 600 hp mark.

Boost by the Pound

Making power has never been an issue for Honda's B-series family, but on the street big numbers have often proven to be more of a curse than a blessing, an unforgiving reminder of the inherent uphill battle of straight-line, front-wheel drive performance. Converting to AWD is nothing new, something first done many years ago and since then often talked about by hardcore Honda fans, but rarely attempted.

Today you'll find far more supporting parts from various brands that offer bolt-in kits and accessories, much of which are based around the fourth-generation Civic's wagon counterpart. Smith dove in well before the mainstream had taken notice, so he's got a head full of experience from his hands-on efforts. Forget about bragging rights or getting it done before the next guy, the benefit here is his ability to apply that knowledge to a true streetcar that stacks miles regularly and isn't a ticking time bomb.

Smith's process of converting his Civic to AWD was a gradual one that began with a CR-V AWD transmission swap, followed by a custom fuel setup in the rear that includes a fuel cell and multiple pumps, all strategically placed to make room for the necessary rear-end changes that would eventually make their way to the chassis.

He adds, "the conversion consists of a bunch of custom parts, all built in-house and with the help of a couple of companies. Over time we swapped a lot of the parts that we used to get it up and going. Without Sone from S1 Built, it would have been possible, but much harder. I reached out to him and asked for help and with no questions, he jumped on board."

To get all four wheels to cooperate with one another, the drivetrain is armed to the teeth and begins with an OEM Civic wagon differential and viscous coupler that's been fortified with Smith's own driveshaft and billet carrier bearings which he markets under his B&N Designs LLC brand. The aforementioned CR-V trans is fitted with Liberty face-plated gears (1-4), Speedfactory Racing's "FWD2AWD" gear conversion kit, Competition Clutch, and MFactory limited-slip.

A Solid Foundation

The foundation for Smith's 600 hp output is a GS-R engine block that's with Golden Eagle sleeves and O-rings, housing an Eagle crank, rods, and 84mm Traum 10.5:1 pistons. Up top, a Portflow head is fitted with a Supertech valvetrain and factory-issue Type R cams. The engine formula chosen is simple, and entirely tried and true.

The excessive jam being produced comes by way of a Garret G30-900 turbo mounted to a Gonzo Motorsports manifold and overseen by a Turbosmart 60mm wastegate. Gonzo is also responsible for the water-to-air intercooler kit that uses a slew of painstaking pie-cuts to snake just beyond the up-pipe and wastegate bellow, then around the the swirl pot and to the Skunk2 throttle body and intake manifold. Engine demands and logging parameters are established by AEM's Infinity management and sent through a Rywire harness and helps churn out the 660 hp and a staggering 498 lb-ft of torque. Just to note, the vehicle's overall weight should be around 2,400 pounds with the pilot on board.

The area right above the driver's engine mount is now filled with a custom catchcan that Smith offers under his B&N banner. At the firewall, the brake booster was eliminated and in its place you'll find a trio of Tilton reservoirs that support an aluminum CompBrake pedal box which sits just behind a custom foot plate in the cabin. Also inside, a fixed-back seat wrapped in OEM material holds smith in place while a lengthy extended hub puts the Nardi steering wheel right in front of him as he takes cues from a Racepack IQ3 digital display.

Mild on the Outside, Wild on the Inside

Other than the hood-exit exhaust peeking through, the Civic carries a relatively mild exterior. A square wheel set up consisting of matte black 16x8 CCW Classic wrapped in 225/45 Toyo Proxes R1R poke out from the fenders slightly. The poke isn't chasing the Instagram-promoted, cringe-inducing extreme wheel fitment trend, but rather to get as much contact patch as possible without going too far overboard. Even with AWD firepower, the lightweight hatchback is a terror and demands not only Smith's undivided attention, but his experience behind the wheel.

It's really nothing new to see the Honda crowd figure out how to adapt cross-platform applications in order to maximize performance, that's what the community has thrived upon ever since its formation in the late '80s. A build like Brandon Smith's split-personality hatch, however, that's able to cruise comfortably for hours or unleash all hell through its fortified AWD-converted drivetrain at a moment's notice, certainly is.

Honda wins Red Dot Awards 2021 for new Jazz e:HEV, Jazz Crosstar e:HEV and Forza 750 - Automotive World

pret.indah.link

Honda’s new hybrid-only Jazz and Jazz Crosstar models and the Forza 750 scooter have been awarded highly coveted Red Dot Awards 2021 in the ‘Product Design’ category. These internationally renowned accolades are only bestowed upon the highest quality products that excel in product, brand and communication design.

The annual Red Dot awards are decided by a panel of 50 international experts who test, evaluate and discuss each entry to spotlight outstanding design and innovation. The judging criteria are reappraised and adapted each year to reflect the latest technical, social, economic and ecological requirements.

“We have had another successful year, receiving several awards in the Product Design category of the globally-recognised Red Dot design awards,” said Toshinobu Minami, Chief Operating Officer, Design Center, Honda R&D Co. Ltd.,

“Since our establishment, we at Honda have always aimed to reflect the idea of ‘making customers’ daily lives more enjoyable’ in our product design, and we believe that receiving these awards is a recognition of our success in doing this. We will continue to follow this unchanging principle, thinking ‘outside the box’ to design products that provide ‘surprise and excitement’ to customers’ lives.”

The Jazz e:HEV and Jazz Crosstar e:HEV are aligned with Honda’s commitment to electrify 100% of its European models by 2022. The Jazz was designed to encapsulate Honda’s ‘Yoo no bi’ philosophy, which recognises the beauty that exists in everyday items honed over time to make them even more beautiful and ergonomically satisfying to use. The Jazz design also employs Honda’s ‘Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum’ (M/M) development principle, which is based on the belief that the purpose of technology and design is to serve the needs of the driver and passengers. The result is a car that combines functionality and usability, expressed through innovative features like Magic Seats, yet maintains a sleek and modern appearance.

The rugged Crosstar variant was created to broaden the appeal of the model, presenting a more SUV-style proposition, oriented toward those with active lifestyles. Increased presence comes from a bold front grille design, substantial black trim and stylish side sills and roof rails. The Crosstar-specific alloy wheels, which widen towards the rim, create an increased sense of stability and enhance the robust overall visual effect.

Launched in the Autumn of 2020, the brand-new Honda Forza 750 crowns the celebrated Forza range of luxury scooters, which combine ‘GT’ levels of comfort and road presence with sporty, agile performance in a supremely stylish, premium package. The new flagship Forza is no exception, with classy, roomy styling that offers ample leg room and wind protection for comfortable high-speed cruising, coupled with excellent aerodynamics thanks to a sleek front-end design and slim rear section. It is also designed for easy use around town, with stable handling and effortless acceleration from its torquey, fuel-efficient 745cc twin-cylinder engine.

The classically Forza feature-rich spec sheet includes multiple riding modes, Honda Selectable Torque Control, Honda’s unique-in-motorcycling Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), full LED lighting and Honda Smartphone Voice Control. The low 790mm seat height, 22 litres of under-seat luggage space – enough to accommodate a full-face helmet – and USB-C charger socket enhance the everyday usability.

Updated guidelines, application form, information and news about the Outdoor Access Initiative are available at YamahaOAI.com. New Yamaha bike spotted testing in India

New Yamaha bike spotted testing in India

We are back with another set of spy shots, you guys. This time, what appears to be a brand new Yamaha bike was spotted out and about in India. However, we can't say just yet precisely which Yamaha bike it is and nor has the two-wheeler manufacturer said anything about it. Nonetheless, it is abundantly clear to see that no matter what upcoming bike in India it may be, it will be a while before it arrives in the market. How do we know? Well, based on the images, it is clear that the motorcycle is still in the development stages. With that being said, let's move on and see what we are able to observe about the bike from these images.

First things first -- it appears to bear quite a bit of resemblance to the Yamaha FZ, especially on account of the swingarm, wheels, and telescopic fork. These bits on the test mule are precisely the same as the one seen on the Yamaha FZ. Now, of course we don't know anything about the engine just yet. It is, after all, quite challenging to figure out the engine capacity by looking at pictures. But if we had to guess, the bike either has the Yamha FZ25's 249 cc, air-cooled engine or perhaps the 149 cc motor from the Yamaha FZ and FZ-S bikes.

New Yamaha bike

Suffice it to say as far as this upcoming Yamaha bike is concerned, there's plenty of mystery to go around. But that's not going to keep us from engaging in some conjecture, especialy given the dearth of information about the motorcycle at this point.

Word has it that this could either be a version of the Yamaha XSR155 that is sold in other markets across Asia, such as Indonesia and Thailand. If not that, it may be the Yamaha FZ-X; the company had trademarked this name in India late last year. However, there is absolutely no hint that would suggest that this test mule is the Yamaha FZ-X motorcycle. Guess we will have to be patient and wait to learn more about this upcoming Yamaha bike in India.

Yamaha’s SoundCap: The Answer to Background Noise - UC Today

pret.indah.link

In the current work climate, most of us have to cope with background noise while conducting calls on a regular basis. Whether we work in an open workspace, where other people are constantly speaking, printers are printing and phones are ringing; or at home, where our kids bark and our dog cries (or is it the other way around?) – superb noise-cancelling capabilities are becoming critical for our headsets and speakerphones.

SoundCap, Yamaha’s patented NC technology (currently used exclusively in their YVC-330 speakerphone, pictured above), is a unique development offering an original approach to this issue.

I sat down with Holger Stoltze, Senior Director of Technical Sales and Marketing at Yamaha UC, to get a deeper understanding of how this very cool technology works.

Your Very Own Sound Bubble

Holger Stoltze

Holger Stoltze

SoundCap is currently implemented in the company’s YVC-330 open spaces speakerphone, and it functions exactly as its name implies: it’s a “cap” creating a type of closed circle around the device. The cap keeps any noise made beyond a defined reach (10 feet or three meters) from being heard by the far end of the conversation. This way, only participants from within the circle are heard, which results in a controlled noise-cancelling effect.

“In fact, when you have a YVC-330 on your desk, and you’re talking to it and slowly going backwards – you will reach a threshold where the far end can suddenly no longer hear you,” explains Stoltze.

This is done using a unique AI-based technology, which calculates, based on audio arrival, where the audio comes from. This way, it can determine which part of the audio belongs inside the circle, and which part doesn’t.

“We have users who reviewed the product while working from home, and it works fantastically well,” Stoltze shares.

“The SoundCap technology within YVC-330 can be manually turned on and off. So you see users sitting at their desk with the TV on in the background, switching SoundCap on and off – and you hear the TV one minute, then don’t hear it the next minute. It’s amazing.”

Another feature provided by SoundCap is a complete automatic switch-off of any audio pick-up when no-one within the conversation-circle is speaking.

“While SoundCap does a wonderful job cutting out most of the background noise, it can’t completely cut out everything,” says Stoltze.

“So when it identifies that nobody inside the circle is speaking, and there’s only irrelevant noise coming from outside – it actually cuts off the microphone entirely, to really make the silence come across to the far end. This really helps to eliminate any unwanted disturbances so that people can concentrate better”

Automatic Volume Adjustment

In addition to its NC capabilities, SoundCap offers another useful feature that actually has to do with the speakers rather than the microphone.

As background noise is dynamic – people walk in and out of the room, other conversations start and stop, etc. – the level of noise outside the circle varies. When we participate in a call, we tend to adjust the volume of our speakerphone according to the level of noise around us: the noisier it is, the louder the volume. However, as Stoltze points out, “when the noise level goes down outside the circle, you don’t necessarily reach back to your speakerphone to lower the volume there as well.”

This may ultimately turn your conversation into somebody else’s background noise, interrupting others sharing a workspace with you.

SoundCap’s automatic volume adjustment takes care of that for you.

“When it becomes noisier outside the circle – SoundCap makes sure that the volume goes up. When noise from the outside decreases – it makes the speakerphone’s volume go down, as there’s no longer a need for it to be this loud,” explains Stoltze.

More to Come?

Currently, Yamaha’s only product using SoundCap is the YVC-330, but the sound expert may decide to implement it in more of their products in the future.

“We are definitely reusing the technologies that we develop in more products over time,” says Stoltze. “If we find that SoundCap is a good fit for any of our future products, we’d love to reuse it, as it is proving itself to be extremely effective for our customers.”

Q: The recent P2P test at IMS involved four teams: Penske, Ganassi, Andretti and Arrow McLaren SP. I know that other teams occasionally get involved, but wondered how allocations are made to keep a level playing field? Also, do teams pay to be involved?

Oliver Wells

RM: Let’s ask someone who knows the answer. Mike Hull, managing director of Chip Ganassi Racing. “Frankly, the teams don’t push for it, or politic for it, it’s a call that’s made between IndyCar and the two engine suppliers. What’s changed with Jay Frye’s administration, however, is that teams test exclusively for IndyCar, rather dragging their feet testing their own items.

“Using the recent Push to Pass test as an example, the teams are given a very direct test plan by IndyCar that limits the team’s time up front to try their own items. The teams fit in advance the test items, so are ready to get after it once the track is ready. The test is IC-issued pre-fit parts, combined with driver feedback, their access to the data stream, and then onto the next phase of the test. What happens is that you find a baseline for balance and then start the test. IndyCar calls it when they’ve learned from their items. The teams aren’t given the rest of the time for their individual improvements. IndyCar likes a cross-section and requires unselfish access to the data stream that can represent the field. It aids their process to create decision-making direction with fairness of various driver styles.”

Q: Amen to your column “A power play the Indy 500 doesn’t need.” The Indy 500 is not about how many passes are made, it’s about holding onto the damn car, hitting your marks every time and being up front at the end. A fan knows this, and is on the edge of their seat pulling not only for their driver, but for the whole field to make it safely to the finish. IndyCar would do well in telling more about how hard it is to travel at 240 mph into Turn 1 at Indy or how much work it takes to set the cars up so that it will turn at speed instead of worrying about push-to-pass. If the powers that be want more craziness and danger, leave the boost up for the race. Agree?

Jack, Ft Myers, FL

RM: Like I wrote, Jay Frye and his staff do a good job of trying to find the right balance of power and downforce on ovals, and I trust they will listen to the drivers about P2P. Do we need more HP? Sure, as long as there’s less downforce.

Driver feedback from last week’s test at IMS was unanimous: P2P + Speedway = bad. Owens/IndyCar

Q: I read your piece about IndyCar testing overtake assist systems at IMS. I agree that the Indy 500 doesn’t need P2P, KERS, DRS, or any other overtake assist system. Instead, the race just needs a good aero package. From 2012-2017 when IndyCar used the base DW12 aero kit (2012-2014) followed by the manufacturer aero kits (2015-2017), the Indy 500 averaged 43.67 lead changes per race. When the series moved to the universal aero kit (UAK18) in 2018, the average number of lead changes fell to 26.67 per race.

In other words, the competitiveness of the Indy 500 decreased by almost 40% with the introduction of the current aero package. I know some purists argue that the previous packages made passing too easy, but if there’s one problem IndyCar (and motorsports in general) doesn’t have, it’s that there’s too much passing. Putting on a great show for the fans should be the top priority. And I know it’s easier said than done, but if IndyCar can just get back to what made those packages great, we wouldn’t see another boring Indy 500 would we?

Garrick Aube

RM: I don’t see Indy as boring, but I guess a lot of people want this non-stop passing parade. The Hanford Device accomplished that in CART: nobody wanted to lead and it was too easy to pass, but it was great for the paying customers and TV audience. I agree with Dixon that Indy should not be easy, and as I noted, these past decades have had some of the best finishes in IMS history. Newgarden told us about some of the changes for May (filling in the hole in the underwing and using strakes) to try and improve overtaking, so maybe that’s going to help.

Q: I couldn’t agree more with regard to not having Push to Pass at Indy. But I was a little disappointed when you said that spec racing is here to stay. I guess I’m in the old school category in regards to spec cars. I honestly think that’s one of the reasons racing seems kind of stale, with all the gimmicks you mentioned. I guess my question is, why do you think spec racing is here to stay?

John Furnis

RM: Money, budgets and manufacturers interested in building IndyCars are all in short supply. And engine leases are boring, but they make for good racing and lots of finishers. Like I’ve been saying, the fact there is going to be 22-25 cars at every race (especially after this pandemic) might be the most encouraging thing I’ve seen in years.

Q: Any word on if fans will be allowed to attend next week’s Open Test at IMS? My buddy from Michigan and I were talking last night and wondered why don’t they open the lower section of Stand E and charge $10 to pay for cleaning the stands and a couple of bathrooms after? I would gladly pay $10 after driving 300-plus miles since you can see so much more than you can from the viewing mounds. I think there is a lot of pent-up demand and a lot of people would come watch if stands were open. Shouldn’t be too hard to socially-distance.

Don Weidig

RM: The Speedway is trying to determine what kind of options there might be for spectators, and they intend to put out an update at the end of the week.
