The 2022 Honda Insight hybrid sedan gets a price bump for the new model year, but retains its 52 mpg combined EPA fuel-economy rating.

The price increase is largely due to the elimination of the base LX trim level, leaving only the EX and Touring trim levels. The 2022 Honda Insight EX starts at $26,205, while the 2021 Insight LX had a $23,885 base price. Both prices include mandatory destination charges of $955 for the 2021 model year and $995 for the 2022 model year.

Honda also raised the base prices of the two remaining Insight trim levels by $400, before the higher destination charge is applied. With destination, the fancier Touring trim level starts at $30,235 for 2022.

No apparent changes were made to specifications or feature content. The Insight EX gets the same 52 mpg combined (55 mpg city, 49 mpg highway) as before, while the Insight Touring is still rated at 48 mpg combined (51 mpg city, 45 mpg highway).

The Insight's powertrain consists of a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-4 engine, coupled to Honda's two-motor hybrid system. Total system output remains unchanged, at 151 horsepower.

Although Honda has taken away the Insight LX, it's recently added a base Accord Hybrid—effectively making the larger Accord Hybrid just $1,360 more than the Insight.

With Honda slimming down the Insight lineup, this brings back into focus the idea that Honda might be preparing a high-mpg hybrid version of the new Civic hatchback. The Insight uses the body shell from the outgoing 10th-generation Civic sedan, with similar interior dimensions but different exterior styling, so a return to Civic Hybrid branding wouldn't be much of a stretch.

Honda has opted not to bring the latest Fit, which is offered only as a hybrid, to the United States—although the U.S.-market HR-V crossover might arrive as a hybrid. The automaker also plans to launch a series of electric cars starting mid-decade, but until then it plans to emphasize hybrids.

Japanese carmakers Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and Honda Motor Co (7267.T) have temporarily suspended production at their factories in Malaysia due to a nationwide coronavirus lockdown, the companies said on Tuesday.

Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on Friday announced a "total lockdown" from June 1 to 14 in a bid to contain a recent surge in coronavirus infections. read more

Toyota, which produced around 51,000 vehicles in Malaysia last year, will suspend sales and production from Tuesday, a spokeswoman said, adding that the company has not decided when production will resume.

Toyota's subsidiary Daihatsu Motor, which makes compact cars, will also halt production between June 1 and 14, a spokesman said. The subsidiary made about 220,000 vehicles in the Southeast Asian nation in 2020.

A Honda spokesman said the automaker will temporarily close two plants during the lockdown. These plants, which annually make about 100,000 cars and 300,000 motorcycles, are expected to resume production from June 15, he said.

Sara Daavettila from the University of North Carolina, Katarina Jokic of the University of Georgia, University of Virginia's Emma Navarro and Estela Perez-Somarriba from the University of Miami are the four finalists for the Class of 2021 Honda Sport Award for Tennis as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA).

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 45 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics".  The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2021 Honda Cup which will be presented on a telecast on CBS Sports Network, on June 28, at 9 pm ET.

The tennis finalists were chosen by a combination of NCAA Championship finishes and national tennis rankings. The Honda Sport Award winner for Tennis will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.

Daavettila, a fifth-year senior from Williamson, Mich., was the top seed entering the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship and ranked as high as No. 1 in the ITA national rankings. She is the 2021 ACC Player of the year and a seven-time ITA All-America selection. With a career record of 149-35, she is currently second in program history with 149 career singles victories. She was the 2019 ITA Fall National Championship singles titlist and a member of three ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

A senior from Novi Grad, Bosnia, Jokic is a two-time Honda Award finalist and ranked as high as No. 1 in the ITA national rankings for two weeks this season. She is the 2021 SEC Player of the Year and only the second Bulldog to be SEC Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in their career. She entered the 2021 NCAA Champions as a No. 4 seed in single and a 5-8 see in the NCAA Doubles Tournament.  

Named the 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year, Navarro entered the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship as the No. 3 seed and went on to capture the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship. The freshman from Charleston, S.C., began her career by winning her first 14 singles matches and ranked as high as No. 1 in the ITA national rankings. She was a six-time ACC Freshman of the Week and a two-time ACC Player of the Week.

Perez-Somarriba, a fifth-year senior from Madrid, Spain, was the Class of 2019 Honda Award winner for tennis and a two-time Honda Award finalist. She is a four-time first-team All-ACC honoree and advanced to the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship title match finishing runner-up after capturing the title in 2019. She ranked as high as No. 1 in the ITA national rankings and is a four-time ITA All-American in singles.

The CWSA, celebrating its 45th anniversary year, has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs.

The Frenchman qualified on pole for the 23-lap Mugello race and fended off early resistance from Pramac's Johann Zarco following a lap-two crash for leader Francesco Bagnaia to go on to dominant for his third win of the year.

This came in spite of the sizable top speed disadvantage Yamaha is carrying in 2021, but marks the second track this year – Qatar included – characterised by a long straight and expected to be a Ducati stronghold where Yamaha has triumphed.

A key update for Yamaha at Mugello was the introduction of its front holeshot device, which meant Quartararo – who now leads the championship by 24 points - only lost one position at the start of last Sunday's race.

When asked by Motorsport.com if he felt Yamaha now has a complete package, he said: "Yes, I think we have a complete package.

"I think that, OK, the top speed is not the best but we have won in two tracks that actually [suited to] Ducatis.

"Everyone said the Ducati [would be dominant] in Qatar, the Ducati [would be dominant] here. But actually, I think no one expected to have one Yamaha, one KTM and Suzuki on the podium today.

"I think what we missed was the front [start] device because our starts were terrible and we improved a lot.

"So, I think that for one lap first of all the top speed is not so important and I think for the race I've taken the confidence that even if we don't have the top speed we can manage without the top speed.

"But our bike is going extremely good, I have a really good feeling on the front. And at the end there's not many tracks where there's a long straight, so we will see in Barcelona I was also really good there."

Teammate Maverick Vinales endured a tough race from 13th on the grid following a controversial qualifying.

Recovering to eighth in the race, Vinales blamed his troubles on his choice of the medium front tyre.

"I really thought the result would be totally different because it's a track I like, a track where I feel good," Vinales said.

"Somehow after FP1 I lost the feeling. The only thing I changed from FP1 to FP2 is the front tyre, I just went to the medium and then that started the problems.

"So, I don't know why we didn't try the soft front again. So, I think we didn't pay enough attention to that because in FP1, the first touch was fantastic, I did 1m47.1s in just six laps.

"So, basically looks like I lost a lot of turning. So, we need to check, we need to analyse.

"In one way it's difficult because I make a bad result but in the other way it's positive because we have data from FP1 to understand why.

"This is the most important thing. We have the data to analyse and we have one guy in our team who is winning."

Yamaha Motor India has announced a significant drop in prices of two of its motorcycles – the FZ25 and FZS 25. In a statement issued today, the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer cited success in lowering input costs as the reason for the prices of the bikes being reduced by a big margin. As of today, the Yamaha FZ25’s price is Rs 1,34,800, while the Yamaha FZS 25’s price is Rs 1,39,300 (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi), which is a near-Rs 19,000 drop compared to their previous prices.

“In the recent past, there has been an increase in the input costs, which has led to increase in the Ex-showroom prices of our products, especially in the FZ 25 series. Our team has finally managed to bring down these input costs for the FZ 25 Series & being a responsible manufacturer we would like to pass on the benefit to our customers. With this step, we will reach out to our potential audience by making the FZ 25 range more approachable”, read Yamaha’s statement.

Despite the reduction in prices, both the Yamaha FZ25 as well as the FZS 25 remain unchanged in terms of specification and equipment. With prices lowered considerably, the FZ and FZS 25 are now a good Rs 29,000 – 33,000 cheaper than the Suzuki Gixxer 250, Rs 32,000 – 36,000 cheaper than the Bajaj Dominar 250, nearly Rs 70,000 cheaper than the Husqvarna Svartpilen 250 and Vitpilen 250 and close to Rs 80,000 cheaper than the KTM 250 Duke.

In fact, at their new prices, the Yamaha FZ25 and FZS 25 are closer to smaller-capacity models such as the Honda Hornet 2.0 and the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. The Hornet, a 200 cc model, costs just a few thousand rupees less than the Yamaha FZ25, while the Apache RTR 200 4V with dual-channel ABS is priced on par with the FZ25. Of course, the Yamaha 250s have a larger-capacity engine and a good deal more power than the Honda and the TVS.

For the uninitiated, both the Yamaha FZ25 and FZS 25 are powered by a 249 cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected single-cylinder engine that produces 20.8 hp and 20.1 Nm of torque. Both bikes get a five-speed gearbox, all-LED lighting, 17-inch wheels, disc brakes front and back, and dual-channel ABS as standard.

Honda admits 'leak' fears behind Matsushita refusal - Motorsport.com

Ex-Formula 2 racer Matsushita joined Honda-powered squad B-Max Racing midway through the 2020 season, but was blocked from taking part in pre-season testing and the opening round of the 2021 campaign after joining rival firm Nissan in SUPER GT.

That decision was reversed ahead of April’s second round of the season at Suzuka, and last month at Autopolis Matsushita scored an unlikely podium from 13th on the grid.

Matsushita getting Honda’s blessing to rejoin the Super Formula fray followed Masaya Nagai taking over from Hiroshi Shimizu as the marque’s motorsport boss at the beginning of April.

Looking back on the saga, Nagai clarified in an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com’s Japanese edition that Matsushita’s Nissan links were finally judged not to be an issue.

“[Matsushita] came back to Japan after getting some good results with the support of Honda, but this year he is driving in SUPER GT for Nissan,” Nagai said.

“Within Honda, there was someone that wouldn’t allow him to drive in Super Formula. They said that secrets would leak to Nissan. I wondered if that was really possible. So, I investigated here and there and I concluded that this wouldn’t be the case.

“The reason car manufacturers are involved in racing in the first place is to entertain the fans. The races are more interesting with Matsushita participating, and it makes the fans happy. This way, Super Formula becomes more exciting, right?

“The car manufacturer’s technology is secondary to this. So, we made the decision that Matsushita should be able to compete for B-Max Racing.”

Nagai added that he dislikes the prevailing culture in Japanese motorsport of drivers tending to stick with a single manufacturer for much of their careers.

“It would be more natural if ‘Manufacturer A’ sees a driver who is driving for ‘Manufacturer B’ and says, ‘we want you because you’re a good driver’, or if they are seen by overseas teams and invited to race elsewhere,” said Nagai.

“I think the drivers would also be happier to be recognised for their achievements this way. I don’t like it so much when a driver stays with the same manufacturer forever.”
