With factories able to get closer to full production following the prolonged coronavirus-induced shutdown earlier this year, the supply pipeline is starting to reopen at Basney Honda in Mishawaka.

Though still with a supply better than most dealerships thanks to some timely ordering earlier this year, about 27 new vehicles are now in transit and orders have been placed for 123 additional new vehicles that should be arriving at the dealership in the next couple of months, said Jay Basney, general manager of the dealership.

“We were fortunate to build up our inventory just before the shutdown,” Basney said, adding that an Ohio dealership was so short on new vehicles that it purchased most of the Mishawaka store’s inventory of 2019 models during the height of the pandemic.

With factories ramping up, the popular midsize Pilot crossover, which is built in Alabama, is the first of the 2021 models to arrive at the Mishawaka dealership.

“The Pilot is a popular alternative to a minivan because of its versatility,” said Bob Briney, a sales consultant at Basney Honda. “It can carry seven or eight people, carry more than 100 cubic feet of cargo and tow up to 5,000 pounds.”

After recently gaining new styling, a revamped infotainment system and advanced safety features, Honda has focused on styling upgrades as well as the expansion of features across the lineup.

A top pick for crash safety, the Pilot comes with anti-lock brakes with brake-force distribution and brake assist, stability and traction control, a rearview camera with guidelines, hill start assist and a full array of air bags.

Other standard features include forward collision warning with mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot detection.

All models are available with all-wheel drive.

The Pilot is powered by a 280-horsepower, 3.5L V-6 mated to a nine-speed automatic with paddle shifters. The engine is equipped with variable cylinder management that can deactivate cylinders until additional power is needed.

With a starting price in the mid-30s, the LX comes standard with full power accessories, air conditioning, 18-inch alloy wheels, active noise cancellation, keyless entry with push-button start, auto on/off headlamps, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with cruise and infotainment controls, rear privacy glass and more.

The EX adds remote start, intelligent traction management, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, LED fog lights, tri-zone climate control and the EX-L offers leather-trimmed upholstery, a moon roof, a power liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, driver memory functions, a four-way power passenger seat and Honda’s CabinTalk system.

From there, the Pilot continues to add luxury, convenience and styling features as it moves up through its lineup, finally topping out with the Elite that comes standard with AWD and a price tag approaching $50,000.

The Basney showroom, located at 3820 N. Grape Road, Mishawaka, is open 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
