Despite this, it seems Honda is not content solely catering to enthusiasts with its 306-hp Civic Type R hatchback and it's possible the Japanese automaker may revive the CR-Z in the coming years. Credit a recent trademark application by Honda with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the CR-Z moniker.
Admittedly, it is entirely possible the company plans to sit on the CR-Z mark to prevent another competitor from nabbing it (what General Motors arguably should have done with the "K5" nameplate that now adorns a Kia family sedan). However, we'd like to believe Honda plans to bring a sporty coupe or two-door hatchback back to its lineup.
Like the prior CR-Z hybrid, which left our shores following the 2016 model year, we anticipate any new iteration of the model to embrace electrification. Only time will tell if that manifests itself in the form of a gasoline-electric hybrid or a battery-electric powertrain. Frankly, we'd love to see a battery-electric performance vehicle that channels the charm of the not-sold-in-America Honda E with the driving engagement of the lightweight CRX Si of yore.
We reached out to Honda for more information related to this trademark and the possible reemergence of the CR-Z, but have yet to hear back from a spokesperson. Until then, we'll just have to cross our fingers Honda's proverbial lambs it sacrificed for the 2021 model year ultimately nets a prosperous future that includes the return of the CR-Z to the automaker's model line.
