When I go stomping through my local self-service wrecking yards in search of interesting bits of discarded automotive history, I poke my head into plenty of unexciting-at-first-glance cars in order to find one of three things: seldom-seen manual transmissions, aesthetically-satisfying arrangements of of Little Tree air fresheners and extremely high final odometer readings.
Vehicles that reach the 300,000-mile mark are quite rare, and I'll usually document such vehicles when I spot them (though 1980s Hondas, Toyotas and Mercedes-Benzes hit this milestone fairly regularly). Here's one showing just about 500,000 miles on the clock… but then I looked closer at the speedometer's top speed and realized that this Civic didn't hit milestones, but kilometerstones.
Yes, it's a Canadian-market Civic DX sedan, brought to Colorado by a Canadian Snowbird. I should have realized that when I noticed the lack of underhood federal emission-control sticker and USA-required build tag on the door jamb, but it didn't register until I took a close look at the improbable high number on the speedo. Still, 497,657 kilometers comes to 309,230 Freedom Distance Units, which is a highly respectable total for any car.
It's not rusty and the interior looks quite nice. Perhaps it spent most of its life being towed behind an RV, but I find that most extreme-high-mile cars I find in junkyards show every sign of having been obsessively maintained over their lives.
I do find the occasional car from across the border in Colorado boneyards, including a Canada-only 2004 Acura EL (a luxed-up Civic sold as the Honda Domani in Japan) and a Mexican-market 2009 Opel Corsa with very confusing Chevrolet Chevy badging.
