The debate rages on over which sportbikes are the best in the world, from Kawasaki's speedy arsenal of superbikes to models by the likes of Honda and Triumph that can outdistance a 2020 Corvette C8 in the zero-to-60-mph sweepstakes. Suzuki's been left out of the mix until now, with its introduction of the GSX-R1000R bike in a mad dash to claim the sportbike crown. Here's a look at what the latest Suzuki motorcycle has to offer as a candidate.
Same Engine As An R1000
First, there's very little difference between the new R1000R and its R1000 predecessor in that both models share the same motor. Both feature six-speed manual transmissions and inline four-cylinder 999.8cc engines capable of pumping out 199 hp and 87 lb-ft of torque.
But the big difference is maneuverability. Since the engine is already pretty light, an extra advantage to bike control is the frame that's 10 percent more compact than before, allowing for better handling on roads with multiple twists and turns. Despite its easier handling, this R1000R isn't anywhere close to being novice-friendly although more expert superbike riders will easily notice the difference in performance.
Smooth And Tight
Speed and tighter steering aren't the only aspects that have improved with the R1000R. Dual-cast Brembo and Nissin disc brakes on the front and rear wheels allow for tighter braking. And on those occasions when you want to take the new Suzuki off-road, an oil-damped coil spring suspension makes for a smoother ride.
Even when back on the road, that smoothness is still evident not only with a lighter frame but a more aerodynamic design. The front fender guides incoming air away from the forks while a more sloped bubble screen windshield reduces drag.
MotoAmerica Title
Besides all the engineering modifications, the Suzuki R1000R can also retain some bragging rights, having won MotoAmerica Superbike Championship in 2019, shortly after its rollout and before it was available commercially. And in the case of the latter, owning a version of the champion model will set consumers back $17,699.
