Yamaha has handed OEM bike makers a new option in speccing drive units and batteries with the debut of its new PWseries CE.

Reduction of weight and size remains a key design goal for makers of e-Bike motors and with the PWseries CE Yamaha has reduced the drive unit weight to tip the scales at 2.9kg for the coaster brake iteration; the firm’s lightest product to date.

Having invented the very first EPAC (electrically power assisted cycle) in 1993, the 2020 iteration of the manufacturer’s system is a far cry from its origins. The PWsweries CE offers up 50Nm of torque, is rated at 250W and feeds off a 500Wh battery that charges from flat to full in four hours.

Designed to be mounted either on the downtube or in front of the seat tube, Yamaha’s new External Crossover 500 battery features a simple lock-and-release system that makes it easy to remove and then recharge or store at home.

The centre-mounted motor has been engineered to operate in near silence and is the firm’s quietest to date. In addition to assistance cycling a walk assist mode will help riders manoeuvre the bike when they’re not in the saddle.

In order to ensure an even faster and more flexible service to European bicycle manufacturers in a rapidly expanding marketplace, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd (YMC) in Japan transferred the responsibility for distributing its OEM e-Bike systems to Yamaha Motor Europe (YME) from July 1 , 2020. From its headquarters in Schiphol-Rijk, the Netherlands, YME’s close proximity to its European customers will enable the company to deliver an even more competitive and efficient service that will benefit manufacturers, dealers and end users alike.
