Honda Center joins other arenas as November polling place; will offer drive-thru option - OCRegister

As of this spring, you can get married there; this fall, you’ll be able to cast a ballot there, too.

Even a global pandemic hasn’t stopped the Honda Center from offering people reasons to get out of the house and do something.

The Anaheim arena will be one of Orange County’s polling stations for the Nov. 3 election, officials have announced – and with a feature that hasn’t been offered here since first tested in 2008: drive-thru voting.

As much as three to four times bigger than a typical vote center, the Honda Center will be able to give voters several options, Orange County Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley said.

There’ll be plenty of space inside for people to keep a distance from each other, but those who prefer can just drive through stations set up in the parking lot to either hand their completed mail ballot to a poll worker, or check in, get their personalized ballot and fill it out in the car.

“In this situation with the Honda Center, it just kind of lends itself to that with the way the traffic flows,” Kelley said. “It’ll be just like going through Chick-fil-A.”

The arena’s ticket booths are currently being used by the Orange County Clerk-Recorder’s Office as a socially distanced way to issue marriage licenses and conduct ceremonies.

Arena officials are “thrilled” to partner with the registrar for voting, which will take place at the Honda Center from Oct. 30 through Nov. 3, CEO Tim Ryan said in a news release.

“Together, Honda Center and the Anaheim Ducks are committed to doing our part in assisting our community,” Ryan said.

While the NBA made news by pledging a number of its teams’ arenas will host voting this fall, Kelley said the Honda Center may be the first National Hockey League venue on the West Coast to join the civic engagement effort.

He’s still finalizing other vote center locations, some of which may offer drive-through voting or ballot drop-off.

Ahead of the March primary, Kelley’s office placed more than 100 metal drop boxes for ballots around the county. Those remain in place, but he wanted to give another option to anyone with misgivings about the security of drop boxes or the timeliness of the postal service.

“I’ve received a lot of feedback, particularly from senior groups, because there’s concern not only about COVID, but because they want to hand off their ballot to a person,” he said.
