When the Yamaha T7 was teased way back in 2016, everyone wanted to know more. The development seemed to drag on, but it was well worth the wait.
The Tenere 700 fills a gap in the adventure bike market that has seemingly been there for years now, with very few real alternatives when it comes to the best of both worlds machine. Other brands understandably either focus on dirt performance or road performance, with the compromise being seen on the other end. Yamaha somehow toes this line, and instead of creating something rather lukewarm like most people expected, they managed to produce something rather incredible.
So, with the already incredible machine on the market, we are all excited to see what the upgraded Rally Edition has to offer.
Versatile CP2 Engine
The same versatile parallel-twin you will find in the MT07, XSR, and Tracer 700 does duty here. This is what we all got so excited about in the beginning after all.
It really is as good as we all expected it to be, fitting the more dirt-oriented bike like a glove. The rally edition is more or less unchanged from the stock version, only getting a slip-on Akrapovic exhaust. Although the performance won’t reflect on paper so much, the pipe will improve the way the power is made and of course will add some bark.
Heritage Rally Colors
Depending on what floats your boat, this is what most people will actually make spending the extra money the most worth it. It is a nod to its Rally roots and does a great job of setting it apart from the rest of the herd.
The colors were first used on both the XT600 Dakar bikes as well as the bikes that hit the showroom floors in 1983. We certainly think they look great on the Tenere and they will only add value to the bike, with this being something of a limited edition currently only being made available in Europe.
Rally Upgrades
In truth, this is what really sets the bike apart from the stock version. All the upgrades they include are focused on making the bike better on dirt.
For sure you could buy these separately, and for sure that will cost more than the sticker price Yamaha is offering here. This, if it is what you are after, makes this a bit of a bargain; it gets an upgraded rally seat that makes it easier to shift your weight around and get up on the pegs. It gets a 4mm skid plate, chain guard, and radiator guard all adding much-needed protection. To round it all off, it gets extra grip pads down the sides and a set of Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires. Bought separately these premium add-ons would set you back thousands of dollars.
Summary
If you plan on getting the Tenere and actually using it off-road, we think this is the one to have. No doubt people will want to personalize their machines, but if you are after value for money, this isn’t like all the other “heritage bikes” that add a new set of fairings and couple thousand dollars for the name. This is the real deal, adding surprising value to an already brilliant machine.
