Founded in Tokyo in 1948, Honda was born as a manufacturer of motorizes bicycles. Moving on from the bicycles, the Japanese company has been producing more cars than motorcycles, despite currently being the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer. Even more surprising is that Honda exports soybeans too, not just vehicles, to the U.S. The manufacturer produces over 14 million engines a year, as well as aircraft, lawn equipment, and solar cells.
Despite Covid-19, Honda reported a September 2020 sales bump of 20.4 percent, with trucks setting the record. Honda is a winner and these five motorcycles and five cars prove it.
10 Motorcycle: The Rebel
Honda created the Rebel with two trims, the 300 and 500, with the latter packing a lightweight, narrow 471cc parallel-twin engine. The sexy bike is available in three, chrome colors made to attract: graphite black, matte blue jeans metallic, and matte armored silver. The 2020 model has upgrades such as the LED lighting package, the slipper clutch, and a new suspension. Optional accessories include custom passenger seats, the center tank pad, and front fork boots.
As Cycle World wrote, “the Honda’s Rebel 500 carries the torch for the beginner cruiser category and with smooth and torquey power, comfortable ergos, useful updates, commendable attention to detail, and affordable pricing these machines will continue to be enjoyable regardless of gender or skill level.“ With a base price of $6,199, the Rebel is a must-have.
9 Car: The Honda NSX
Honda started the production of the NSX in 1990 and it picked it back up in 2016, after a few years of production’s pause. The first generation had an all-aluminum body with a 3.0L V6 engine, a 5-speed manual transmission, and styling inspired by an F-16 fighter jet cockpit. The current and second generation is a hybrid sports car powered by 3.5 L twin-turbocharged V6 engine and all-wheel drive drivetrain. From 2016 and 2019, Honda sold 1258 units of the NSX in the U.S. market with a price tag of $157,500.
“This really is a different kind of supercar, one that doesn’t trade on badge kudos or nape-prickling noise. But nor will it be quite the everyday hero its forebear was thanks to its dismal practicality,” was Top Gear's verdict on the NSX.
8 Motorcycle: The Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin
The goal of this Honda is one and one only: adventure. With a front 21-inch spoke, aluminum rim 1.85x21" and rear 17-inch spoke, aluminum rim 2.75x17" and 3.00x17", the Africa Twin is meant to go off-road. Powered by a parallel-twin 998cc engine, the African Twin is meant to run. With front and back brakes made of dual wave floating hydraulic disc with the aluminum hub, this Honda motorcycle is meant to stop at its top speed of 125mph.
“Honda comes off looking like the better choice for off-road work,” Top Speed wrote. With a starting price of $14,000, this Honda is a great way to enjoy a weekend off-road.
7 Car: The CR-V
This compact SUV from Honda comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind-spot monitoring, and dual-zone climate control. More features include heated front seats, an all-wheel drive, and a 1.5-liter unit engine that powers up 190 horsepower for the petrol model, while the hybrid model is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors that combine for 212 horsepower. The interior of the CR-V is just as stunning as its mechanical details. The style combines faux-wood accents, chromed plastic, and brushed-satin finishes.
Honda offers four trims, which also include a seven-seat option. U.S. News & World Report describes the Honda CR-V as a "very good compact SUV, and it's about as close to the total package as you can find in this segment. The CR-V's performance is well-rounded, with spry acceleration, great fuel economy, and forgiving ride quality."
6 Motorcycle: The Honda CBR600F Hurricane
Honda launched the CBR600F in 1987 as a four-cylinder sports bike. The modern models are powered by a 599cc liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine that produces 113 horsepower. This Honda bike features anti-lock brakes, LED lights, and computer-controlled digital transistorized with 3-D mapping. The starting price of the CBR600F is $11,799, this Honda is a fan’s favorite.
As Cycle World writes, “It’s no wonder that the CBR600RR platform has chalked up plenty of victories in the World Supersport Championships over the years.”
5 Car: The 2002 Honda Integra Type R
Born as Honda Integra, the Type R is an award winner. Six times, Car And Driver named this model in its Ten Best list. The first generation was already a winner in 1987, thanks to the car’s DOHC, multi-valve engines (which weren’t common in the 80s), and to its improved climate control system.
This Honda wasn’t just popular with the industry’s magazines and publications but in the racing world. Racing driver Parker Johnstone won the International Motor Sports Association driver’s championship in 1988 in an Integra, while the Honda Type R won for six consecutive years the GT World Challenge America in the Touring Car class.
4 Motorcycle: The Honda CRF450R
“Honda currently has one of the most powerful and responsive 450cc dirt bikes to ever hit the market,” Dirt Rider wrote about the 2020 Honda CRF450R. “The Honda CRF450R has been a consistent front-runner in Dirt Rider's 450 Motocross Shootout since its radical redesign back in 2017.” Honda the Selectable Torque Control, a traction-control system that monitors rpm spikes relative to throttle input, and responds by temporarily reducing torque to aid rear wheel traction.
A revised engine mapping offers three map options: Standard, Smooth, and Aggressive. To eliminate unsprung weight and improve heat distribution, Honda eliminated the rear brake rotor guard. Needless to say, the 2021 CRF450R is a much-awaited bike.
3 Car: The 1968 Honda S800 Coupe
Completely different from the other four Honda cars in this list, the S800 Coupe is worth mentioning - and praise. This model was produced from 1966 to 1970 and it was available both as a two-door coupe or roadster. The car is powered by a 791 cc I4 engine and a 4-speed manual all-synchromesh transmission. It was the first Honda to reach 100 mph, a record-breaker.
In the four years of production, Honda manufactured 11,536 S800s which now sell for an average of $30,000. To celebrate its 60th anniversary in the U.S. in 2019, Honda showcased Daniel Wu’s “Outlaw,” a restored and modified Honda S800 that took everyone's breath away.
2 Motorcycle: The RVF-RC 45
Produced for only five years (between 1994 and 1999), this special edition Honda was created for the Superbike World Championship. It featured a DOHC liquid-cooled V4 4-stroke engine and it utilized electronic fuel injection. The RC 45 was lightweight thanks to the engine components made from magnesium as well as Lightweight low friction pistons. Honda made only 200 units of the RVF-RC 45 and it carried a price tag of $27,000.
As Cycle News writes, “There are several highlights when riding an RC45, but none, absolutely none, tops hearing that gear-driven-cam V4 at full song. It’s a flat, droning roar, so far removed from any V4 since this bike came to market.”
1 Car: The 2017 Civic
Honda started manufacturing the Civic in 1972, but the 2017 model is the top jewel of the brand -its tenth generation. It features a fastback exterior design and a new chrome wing design in the front. Inside, the 2017 Civic saw an upgrade with a 7-inch LCD screen positioned directly behind the steering wheel and the cabin is roomy. On one ride, the model reached 60 mph in 6.3 seconds thanks to turbocharged engines, impressive for a Civic. Various generations of the Honda Civic participated in races such as the Bathurst 1000 in Australia and the 2012 European Touring Car Championship.
As Edmunds wrote, “Redesigned just a year ago, the 2017 Honda Civic has re-established its standing as a no-brainer choice for a small car. Think of it this way: Are you interested in impressive fuel economy and/or class-leading acceleration? Yep, the Civic's got that.”
Honda’s official slogan is “The power of dreams” and these ten vehicles prove it. They prove that the Japanese manufacturer produces dreams, from SUVs to off-road motorcycles, from sports cars to the soybeans.
