Hybrid vehicles have played an increasingly important role in driving Honda brand’s China sales, Honda Motor Co.’s China office said this month.
In China, Honda launched sales of its first locally produced hybrid vehicle -- the hybrid version of the Accord sedan -- in 2016.
From 2017 until now, the Japanese brand has rolled out hybrid variants for seven other locally produced models in the market: the Civic, Inspire, Crider and Envix sedans, the CR-V and Breeze crossovers, and the Odyssey and Elysion multipurpose vehicles.
Along with the expansion of its hybrid lineup, Honda’s hybrid sales in China have kept gathering pace.
By June 2019, three years after the hybrid Accord was brought, Honda’s accumulative hybrid sales in China reached 100,000 vehicles.
The number doubled by January this year and exceeded 300,000 deliveries by September.
For the month of September, Honda’s hybrid sales in the market reached 20,601 units, a new monthly high.
On demand for hybrids and popular gasoline-powered Accord, Civic and CR-V, Honda have kept outperforming the overall new light-vehicle market in China this year.
In September, deliveries at the Japanese brand’s total sales kept an uptick for the third consecutive month, surging 22 percent to 168,872.
For the first three quarters, in a market that contracted 12 percent, Honda’s overall deliveries only dropped 5.1 percent to nearly 1.07 million.
