Above Average: Spacious interior with adult-sized third-row seat; lots of luggage space, standard V6 engine.

Below Average: Minivan-like driving feel; no off-road-themed version.

Consensus: The 2021 Honda Pilot is a roomy and well-rounded entrant from a trusted brand and has been a segment favorite through three generations, as reflected by its strong resale value.

Above Average: Rugged exterior design; three different engine offerings; easier to park than larger utes.

Below Average: Limited luggage space behind the third-row; seats a max of seven.

Consensus: The 2021 GMC Acadia skews toward the smaller end of the midsize SUV spectrum though most variants still seat six. Handsome exterior styling, a range of engine choices, and well-designed infotainment are highlights.

Pilot vs. Acadia: Mainstream midsize SUVs meet

Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot seats seven or eight in its three rows, with second-row captain’s chairs restricted to the top trims. Passenger accommodations are roomy, and cargo space ranges from 16.5 cubic feet behind to the third row to 82.1–83.9 cubic feet with all seats folded. A 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque is now paired exclusively with a 9-speed automatic. Smooth and sufficiently powerful, this V6 tows up to 5,000 pounds (with AWD). Fuel economy is fairly good with EPA combined estimates of 23 mpg (FWD) and 22 mpg (AWD).

The Pilot is comfortable and polished but not particularly sporty, although handling is secure in part thanks to the AWD system’s torque-vectoring capability. Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control are standard, with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert included on all but the base LX. The base version also skips the 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that’s standard elsewhere. Leather seating and a power liftgate come with the EX-L. Captain’s chairs become available at the Touring level, along with navigation, rear-seat entertainment, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The top two trims include all-wheel drive, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

GMC Acadia

In the smaller GMC Acadia, most trims seat six in a 2-2-2 configuration with adequate passenger space. Luggage space behind the third row is very limited at 12.8 cubic feet, however. Depending on the model, a 2.5-liter four, a 2.0-liter turbo I4, and a 3.6-liter V6 can be had. The 2.5-liter comes only in FWD and has little to recommend it beyond low price; with 193 horsepower, it tows just 1,000 pounds, and it’s less efficient than the more powerful 2.0-liter turbo. The 230-hp turbo four is offered only on the SLT and the AWD SLE and gets the best mileage: 25 mpg (FWD) and 24 mpg (AWD). The V6 delivers 310 horsepower and tows 4,000 pounds, at a loss of 3 mpg version the 2.0 turbo.

The off-road-themed AT4 gets a sophisticated AWD system, hill-descent control, and all-terrain tires. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard. The SLT, AT4, and Denali additionally have forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beams. Those items are optional on the SLE but not the SL.

Similarities

Available V6 power; user-friendly infotainment; FWD or AWD

2021 Honda Pilot Advantages

Seating for up to eight; greater luggage space; standard V6 power; greater towing capacity; good resale value.

2021 GMC Acadia Advantages

Greater off-road capability in AT4; better fuel economy; smaller, more maneuverable package; lower starting price.

Final Recommendation

The roomier Pilot has this matchup pretty well in hand unless you want the added off-road capability of the Acadia’s AT4 variant or your parking situation makes the GMC’s smaller size preferable. The Honda does nearly everything well, and also has a good reputation for reliability and robust resale value.
