It is the end of the road, quite literally, for Yamaha’s iconic 600cc track machine theYZF-R6. The iconic middle-weight screamer that was famed for its sky-high rev ceiling will no longer be sold as a road-legal machine. In a recent announcement, Yamaha said that the decision was made considering the evolving global market trends and regulation-driven changes that will limit production volumes on certain models making them, in effect, no longer viable. On the list to be axed after this model year is the R6, the VMAX and the WR250 among others.
Of them though, the Yamaha YZF R6 is by far the most iconic. Making its debut way back in 1990, the R6 was an instant sensation across the globe. While the R6 was never sold officially in India, its international reputation has seen many imported despite ending up costing the same as an R1 once all duties were paid. Yamaha has assured that for track enthusiasts the motorcycle will be sold as a track-only machine called the R6 Race. Yamaha hopes to target track-day regulars and national championships across the world.
More importantly, Yamaha has also said that a full-fledged R6 GYTR will be introduced as early as January 2021. In this spec the R6 will get a GYTR Electronic package with a lightweight wire harness and programmable ECU, AIS (Air Intake System) block off plates that will allow the R6 RACE to channel air directly through its large air intake and finally a full Titanium Akrapovic race exhaust.
