Another bitter Sunday. One to be forgetten. Maverick Vinales leaves Valencia with a tenth place at almost twenty seconds from Yamaha’s Franco Morbidelli. At the end of the race, the Spanish rider was angry, disappointed, and bitter.
If it were up to him, he would get into the first car to leave for Portimao and leave behind what happened in this double race in Ricardo Tormo.
“This is the best I could do today,” he began. “Unfortunately, we were far from the top but, at the same time, I gathered useful information for the next race weekend in Portimao. So we’ll try to be competitive in Portugal and, at the same time, I’m going there with confidence, given that I managed to be fast in the tests.”
Vinales is in a hurry to look to the future but, during the conference, he was concentrated on the present.
“Morbidelli won today, but I prefer to stay focused on myself and collect everything we need for the future, starting from the next race. I feel bad about this GP, especially at the start, since I lost a lot of positions and then it was difficult to recover. The Yamaha 2019? It’s useless to go back to that bike, since I have the 2020, and it’s completely different from the previous one.”
So we’re wondering what Yamaha can do to help him.
“In four years, I’ve said everything I had to say and, at the moment, we don’t know how to improve. Personally, I think my ideas about the bike are clear. Yamaha has to decide what to do now. All I have to do is cross my fingers for 2021, hoping to have a competitive M1. Obviously, I feel really bad being in Valencia and racing like this, since I had other goals. But I try to remain calm without getting nervous.”
Pressing Maverick on the subject almost feels like kicking a guy when he’s down.
“I've stressed the Yamaha’s problems several times. Unfortunately, we complain a lot in terms of rear grip when there’s a lack of grip, as well as acceleration. Something has improved in braking but, otherwise, the problems could persist even in 2021, since the regulation won't be changed and the engine can't be touched.”
His last comment was about Mir’s success.
“Joan deserved it. I congratulate him, since he was fast and consistent. Unfortunately, we threw away three races and that’ rough. We arrived at the end of the season without having the weapons to fight for the Championship.”
