HOT on the heels of the MT-09 reveal last week, Yamaha has just pulled the wraps off a heavily updated MT-07 that includes a host of updated features.
Here is everything you need to know about the 2021 update to one of the best selling middle-weight bikes on the market
Styling
- Next generation body design
- Winglet-style air intakes
- New LED projector headlight with signature Y-shape icon
As soon as the images for the updated MT-09 landed in my inbox, it was clear that the design language used for the MT range of naked bikes was changing. And like it or loathe it, a bod new styling direction was being used by the designers at Yamaha.
For 2021, the MT-07 follows the MT-09 by becoming more minimalist and stripped back, with completely new body panels adorning the new machine. The front end two has been completely redesigned, with the large fishbowl headlight of before being replaced by a single LED unit that is flanked by LED DRLs.
2021 Yamaha MT-07 engine
- 690cc crossplane technology CP2 engine
- EU5-compliant
- 270-degree crank for linear torque delivery
- Maximum torque of 50lb-ft produced at 6,500rpm
- Maximum power of 74bhp produced at 9,000rpm
The heart of the MT-07 is still a 690cc parallel-twin CP2 engine and its distinctive 270° crank. The unit now gains Eur5 certification and power and torque remain the same as before - 74bhp and 50lb-ft respectively.
To get the bike around the latest emissions regulations, Yamaha has changed the exhaust design, air intake, injectors, and ECU settings. While they don’t yield any gain in power, the changes are claimed to make the new unit more linear, something we did find when riding the new Tracer 700 – which shares the same engine as this bike, albeit tuned slightly differently. And anyway, the MT-07 has never really been a bike that needs more power. It’s sweet handling and accessible platform ensures that 74bhp is the magic number.
Brakes
- New 298mm dual front discs
At the front end, the new Yamaha will also be wearing a new set of stoppers, with 298mm discs replacing the 282mm items of before. ABS is still is a two-channel system, which when paired with the new Michelin Road Pilot tyres should provide plenty of grip and feel in all conditions.
Equipment
- Inverted LCD spot colour instruments with remote control
- New LED turn signals
- Latest generation Michelin PR5 tyres
- New colours and graphics
- Compact tubular frame with 805mm seat height
Sadly, for tech fans, there is no TFT screen on the incoming bike, although it does now adopt the funky reverse LCD dash of the previous generation MT-09 SP. It’s a cool looking unit nonetheless, that looks to be nicely laid out and easy to read. The switchgear for the bike has also been updated
As we can all see, the styling of the bike has also been heavily updated. From the front to the back, it is basically all new. With that comes a full suite of lights, all of which are LEDs including the indicators.
The new Yamaha MT-07 will be available in three colours: Storm Fluo, Icon Blue, and Tech Black.
Deliveries to European Yamaha dealers will commence from early March 2021 and the price at the time of writing is TBC.
