Newly refreshed, the 2021 Honda Ridgeline is the urban cowboy of pickup trucks. But does it have what it takes to compete against the 2021 Jeep Gladiator? We take a look.
2021 Honda Ridgeline

2021 Honda Ridgeline Standard Crew Cab starting price: $36,000 EST | Price Yours or View listings near you.
Above Average: Roomy standard crew cab; smooth V6 power; new torque-vectoring AWD; quick acceleration; refined ride; in-bed trunk; multifunction tailgate.
Below Average: Not exactly off-road capable; FWD tows 3,500 pounds; AWD is 5,000-pound tow-capable.
Consensus: With probably the smoothest, carlike ride in the segment, the 2021 Honda Ridgeline oozes comfort. Capability is less than the others in the segment, but it is a segment fuel-efficiency leader. Still, as good as the Ridgeline is, we’d say it’s more adept in urban pursuits rather than journeying to the great beyond.
2021 Jeep Gladiator

2021 Jeep Gladiator starting price: $35,040 | Price Yours or View listings near you.
Above Average: Weekday work truck/weekend fun ride; a worker with a convertible roof; available diesel engine is new for 2021; towing up to 7,650 pounds.
Below Average: Pricey and pricier when the options start adding up; considerable road noise, minimal max payload.
Consensus: The Jeep is a fun ride that is capable, convertible, and commanding in its presence. With a choice of engines and transmissions, as well as full-time 4-wheel drive, it’s a vehicle that can take you to heck and back without breathing hard. New 80th Anniversary Edition and Willys versions make their debut this year.
Ridgeline vs. Gladiator: On or off-road, the choice is yours.
2021 Honda Ridgeline
The Honda Ridgeline is fresh off a restyling for 2021. It gets its motivation from a 3.5-liter 280 horsepower V6 which produces 262 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission it includes front-wheel drive as standard, with AWD an available option. It moves off the line quickly and scores a similar mileage rating to mid-size trucks that get their power from a diesel powerplant.
Innovative features are along for the ride, including an in-bed trunk, multifunction tailgate, and audio exciter elements which convert the entire rear bed into a tailgating party speaker. The Ridgeline comes standard with the Honda Sensing safety suite including Collision Mitigation Braking System with Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control, among others.
2021 Jeep Gladiator
Based on the Jeep Wrangler, the Gladiator now enters its second year of production. New for 2021 is the available 3.0-liter diesel V6 making 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Otherwise, say hello to the standard 3.6-liter V6 that produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard with full-time 4-wheel drive, while those of the two-pedal persuasion can select an 8-speed automatic transmission instead.
Available in Sport, Overland, Mojave, and Rubicon trim levels, Desert Rated is the newest badge available to the Jeep set. The Sport version is pretty basic with roll-up windows, and cloth seating, and a 5-inch infotainment screen, but features great bones by way of a tried and true Dana 44 solid axle and AWD with a transfer case. It only gets better from there.
Similarities
Standard V6 power; optional off-road packages; similar pricing.
Honda Ridgeline Advantages:
Honda fit and finish; carlike ride; reliability and high resale value.
Jeep Gladiator Advantages:
Jeep ruggedness; 5-foot bed, off-road capabilities; optional diesel engine.
Final Recommendation
If you have little to no desire to head off-road, the Honda Ridgeline with its carlike ride quality and Honda reliability will be your natural choice. But if you like living on the wild side, with friends, camping gear, and a long weekend ahead of you, the Jeep Gladiator will feel like a comfortable pair of hiking boots.
