While some automakers have given up on sedan production in recent years, Honda’s continuing focus on the segment will likely help it win over new buyers who don’t want the added expense of a crossover or pickup truck.
Though it’s been named to the Car and Driver 10Best list 35 times, Honda has taken additional steps to boost the appeal of its midsize Accord sedan for 2021 — updating its exterior styling, adding technology and streamlining its trim levels.
“The Accord offers the feel and performance of an upscale sedan without the high price tag,” said Bob Briney, a sales consultant at Basney Honda in Mishawaka. “It might have fallen behind the CR-V in sales volume, but it still remains among America’s most popular vehicles.”
Besides gaining some styling tweaks, all models now come standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Honda Sensing — which includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, automatic high beams, traffic sign recognition, road and lane departure mitigation and forward collision alert with collision mitigation braking.
With top marks for crash safety, the Accord also comes standard with anti-lock brakes with brake-force distribution and brake assist, stability and traction control, hill start assist, an electric parking brake with automatic brake hold and a rearview camera with guidelines.
The Accord is powered by a 192-horsepower, 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 252-horsepower, 2.0L turbocharged four cylinder or a 212-horsepower hybrid powerplant. There are six gas-powered models and four hybrids.
With a starting price below $25,000, the LX comes with full power accessories, auto on/off headlights, LED lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic dual-zone climate control, push-button start and Bluetooth streaming audio.
The Sport adds paddle shifters, fog lights, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, 19-inch wheels, a 12-way power driver’s seat and trim upgrades while the Sport Special Edition includes heated front seats, leather upholstery, a four-way power passenger seat, rear seat reminder and active grill shutters.
The EX-L offers blind-spot detection with cross-traffic alert, a moon roof, parking sensors, an auto dimming rearview mirror, driver memory functions, wireless phone charging and premium audio with satellite and HD radio.
The Sport 2.0T is equipped like the Sport but with the more powerful engine and a 10-speed automatic with paddle shifters while the Touring 2.0 is equipped similarly to the EX-L but further includes a heads-up display, cooled front seats, navigation and Wi-Fi.
“For the ride, comfort and technology it offers, the Accord is just an overall great value,” said Briney.
The Basney showroom, located at 3820 N. Grape Road, Mishawaka, is open 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
