The two highly capable models, which are assembled at Yamaha’s hi-tech U.S.-based plant in Newnan, Georgia, promise to offer adventure seekers an increased level of performance, extreme off-road capability, and reliability without sacrificing comfort.

For those who are unfamiliar with Yamaha’s side-by-side range, the main difference between the RMAX2 1000 and RMAX4 1000 is the number of seats offered. As the name suggests, the first can accommodate two people and the latter four.

The vehicles are built on a solid and durable chassis, which has been redesigned for improved rigidity. The suspension system has also been improved with FOX 2.0 QS3 shocks fitted to wide-arc A-arms for a maximum ground clearance of 13.8-inches (35 cm) on the RMAX2 and 13.4-inches (34 cm) on the RMAX4.

The QS3 shocks feature three positions that can be adjusted without requiring any tools to adapt the suspension for different riding styles and surfaces.

Premium LE models include the latest FOX iQS damping technology, which allows riders to adjust damping settings by toggling a three-way rocker switch fitted on the dashboard.

The Wolverine RMAX2 1000 and RMAX4 1000 models are powered by a high-octane 999cc DOHC, eight-valve, parallel twin-cylinder engine, revving to a strong 8,500 rpm redline. It delivers power through an Ultramatic transmission, one of the most advanced and durable CVTs out there, that comes with a 10-year belt warranty.

Power is maximized in any conditions using the reliable On-Command system that provides two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with limited-slip and full-differential lock.

For the first time on such a vehicle, Yamaha offers its proven D-Mode system as standard on XT-R and LE models. It brings three optimized power delivery settings to match the terrain and riding style.

The Trail mode is designed for a relaxed ride delivering smooth acceleration and linear throttle response, the Sport mode offers powerful acceleration and quick throttle-response for an aggressive riding style, while the Crawl mode comes in handy through mud sections or rock crawling, bringing smooth acceleration, moderate throttle response, and full engine braking.

The capable side-by-sides are fitted with all-new three-piece front doors with an inner-steel structure for easy access into the redesigned cabin.

It employs a luxurious, automotive-type design that features an easy-adjustable passenger handhold, padded knee areas, a soft center-console lid, an open-gate shifter, and a rubber over-molded steering wheel with 17 degrees of tilt adjustment.

XT-R and LE models are also factory equipped with new cut-and-sew seats, a rearview center-mounted mirror, as well as chrome inserts on the shifter and brake lever. All-new blue LED interior lighting with backlit On-Command, Headlight, Winch, D-Mode, and iQS switches, plus Yamaha’s popular Adventure Pro navigation system are also included in the package.

The 2021 Wolverine RMAX2 1000 is available at Yamaha dealers with prices starting at $19,799, while the RMAX4 1000 can be purchased for a starting MSRP of $21,299.

For those who are looking for an extremely capable off-road vehicle for their next big adventure, the two side-by-side models should be an excellent choice, offering a powerful engine, a durable chassis, and a premium interior superior to most of its competitors.
