The driver’s car of the compact class, the best thing about the 2021 Mazda3 is that it handles incredibly well, and now with the optional 2.5-liter turbo, has the power to compete with the best hot hatchbacks. But even the base Mazda3 is a blast to drive, with a very capable 2.0-liter 4-cylinder hooked to a 6-speed automatic that always knows what gear to be in. Front-wheel drive is standard, although the Mazda is one of the rare members of its class that offers all-wheel drive, which comes standard on the Turbo model.
The interior of the Mazda exudes a premium feel, including the base model with its cloth seats. Other trims get synthetic leather, and the top trims have the real thing. There’s plenty of soft-touch materials, and an 8.8-inch screen provides the infotainment center. It is not a touchscreen, however, and is controlled by a rotary knob. The new 2.0 is considered the base model and is only available as a sedan, and while it has the screen, USB ports, Bluetooth, and push-button start, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay are not available until the next level up. While not as well equipped with safety features as the above models, the base trim does include adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. Slightly longer than the hatchback, the sedan has a useful 13 cubic feet of storage space, with the hatchback expanding that to 20 cubic feet.
Honda Civic
Now in its 10th generation, the 2021 Honda Civic is the kind of car you can set your watch to. You know exactly what you’re getting, which is bulletproof reliability, practicality, fuel-efficiency, and good resale value. For 2021, the coupe has been dropped, but the Civic is still available as either a sedan or roomy hatchback. The base 4-cylinder is plenty strong to move it around, and there’s an upgrade turbo if you want to have a little more vroom, with some trims even offering a spunky 6-speed manual.
Inside, the 2021 Civic makes good use of its space, with impressive rear-seat legroom and a very usable 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space. The hatchback has a substantial 42.7 cubes when all the seats are folded. All Civics come standard with the Honda Sensing suite of safety features, and while the LX trim is pretty bare-bones and doesn’t include Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, higher trim levels offer some nice features. The Civic has an excellent reputation for reliability, which is why it consistently has good resale values.
