Contrary to popular belief, the pandemic didn’t end just because the clock struck midnight; in fact, now we have a mutated version of the coronavirus with a different set of complications than the first.
In any case, we’ll all still be stuck inside for a little while while the vaccine rolls out, which means any time we go out, we’ll have to don our masks to protect ourselves.
Honda’s just revealed a new innovation for its vehicles, however, which will hopefully curb the sight of people wearing protective masks in their own vehicles.
It’s called the Kurumaku, and it’s essentially a mask for your car, or rather, built into the car for its occupants. The Kurumaku is a little bit different than a regular cabin air filter as we understand it. Instead of replacing the cabin air filter, it sits on top of it, sort of making it a real “mask” for your car.
The Kurumaku does more than just filter fine particles like the CN85 filters used by other carmakers. The Kurumaku actually destroys existing viruses in the cabin compartment, rather than just trapping them in the filter.
The mask can filter out up to 99.8 per cent of virus droplets present in the air within 15 minutes of air recirculation being activated. For surface viruses, it takes a bit longer, about 24 hours.
The Kurumaku costs 6400 yen (about CDN$80) and is currently available only in Japan for the Honda N-Box, but it’s likely the company will make it more widely available for other vehicles in worldwide markets as well.
