NUTLEY, NJ - Yamaha's "40 Under 40" is a music education advocacy program that celebrates outstanding music educators, Nutley's own Vincent Vicchiarello was just named to the list.
No stranger to media attention, TAPinto Nutley and our friends at the Nutley High School Maroon and Gray, have written about "Mr. V" in connection with the success of the Nutley High School Marching Band. This time, it's all about him. Anonymous sources told us that a collection of students, parents, and alumni secretly nominated Vicchiarello for the honor, in part because he always steps aside and redirects the spotlight toward the students.
According to Yamaha, "In several “40 Under 40” nomination letters, students called him “a role model” and “my rock,” and that “he has taught us the importance of hard work and continuously emphasizes to never give less than our best.” A parent was succinct in his praise of Vicchiariello: “He connects to the kids like no other. Grounded. Has their best interest at heart. One of a kind.”
Vicchiarello is a product of the Nutley Public Schools district, and taught in the district at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. Mr. V told Yamaha he considers the Nutley band program a family.
Finding ways to bring out the best of every student is the hallmark of his education style. In the time of Corona, Vicchiarello and the marching band met for practices in a local park, where the musicians could maintain social distances and practice their craft, and never miss a beat. The COVID-19 pandemic canceled all competitions, but that didn't stop the band from giving it their best. Winning season aside, the marching band half-time show was the other highlight of the Nutley Raiders Football season.
