This Blind Virtuoso Mechanic Is Working On A Yamaha-Powered Mini - HotCars

We would all love to be able to build our own cars. Car building is an incredibly rewarding experience, seeing the finished product that you yourself have completed gives a feeling like no other. And of course, there are kit cars to build, or perhaps taking a car that already exists and turning it into something different and special. The car we are featuring right now that is being built up is dubbed Project YammaMini by its owner and builder Simon, and he is putting a Yamaha R1 engine into one of the very best classic cars, an original Mini.

An Extra Challenge

But Simon has an extra challenge to overcome. He is actually blind, yet is going through this project himself to build a fantastic little car. This was uploaded onto YouTube on his channel, BlindLeadingTheBlind. Simon sadly lost his sight 10 years ago in a car accident, and he wanted to do another Mini build despite that accident. With support from his wife Pru and his best mates Andy and David, they all went and bought a Mini for Simon to build up. And there really is nothing better than an original Mini.

A bike-powered Mini has always been Simon’s dream. And of course, Yamaha has achieved fantastic success in various motorbike racing categories such as MotoGP. And a lot has been done to this car to get it up to standard and as Simon wants it. The subframe has been extensively modified to accommodate the Mini’s new engine, and Simon has removed the pedals and modified them, along with installing a new steering column.

Simon is in fantastic good spirits and says that it has so far been easy for him! But he loves a good challenge. The petrol tank is currently out of the car and he is going to fit a Lucas fuel pump for top fuel injection for the engine. A Concept Racing fuel tank is going to be fitted as well, and this will be placed in the middle of the spare wheel trunk for better weight distribution. And the Yamaha R1 engine itself is a shiny thing of beauty. You can of course subscribe to Simon’s YouTube channel to follow all his progress so far.
