Honda Civic combines performance, efficiency and comfort - South Bend Tribune

Though Honda makes some of the nation’s most popular SUVs and crossovers, it remains committed to the compact car market — even while other automakers are abandoning the segment.

Witness the 2021 Civic. Built in Greensburg, Ind., the award-winning Civic comes standard with a wide array of safety features and offers consumers a choice between nine different sedan and hatchback models.

“The CR-V is Honda’s top-selling model, but the Civic is still very popular,” said Bob Briney, a sales consultant at Basney Honda in Mishawaka. “It has a broad appeal because it’s fun, affordable, safe and dependable.”

With top marks for safety, all Civics come standard with Honda Sensing, which includes forward collision warning with mitigation braking, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and road-departure mitigation.

Other standard safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake-force distribution and brake assist, stability and traction control, hill start assist, an electric parking brake with automatic brake hold and a rearview camera with guidelines.

The LX and Sport are powered by a 158-horsepower, 2.0 L four cylinder mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. The EX, EX-L and Touring are powered by a 174-horsepower, 1.5L turbocharged four cylinder — the same engine used for the sporty hatchback.

Deciding between the sedan or the hatchback largely depends on whether you’re looking for the more refined appearance of a sedan or the aggressive looks of the hatchback, which offers a considerable advantage over the sedan when it comes to moving cargo.

Both award-winning models win high marks from auto critics because of the combination of performance, efficiency and comfort and still remain competitively priced in the compact car segment.

With a starting price just above $21,000, the LX sedan is the most affordable model in the lineup but still comes well equipped with full power accessories, auto on-off headlights and more.

The Sport adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 180-watt stereo, a 7-inch touch screen, remote engine start, fog lights and keyless entry with push-button start while the EX includes the turbocharged engine, heated outside mirrors, a power adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, satellite and HD radio, a moonroof, heated front seats and Honda’s LaneWatch blind-spot camera.

The EX-L further offers leather upholstery and an auto-dimming rearview mirror and the Touring adds heated rear seats, premium audio, LED headlights, automatic windshield wipers and navigation, among other things.

The coupe and the performance-focused Si have been discontinued for 2021, but the race-ready Type R remains in the lineup as well as the Civic-based Insight hybrid, which is a top pick for those looking for the combination of performance with 50 mpg fuel economy.

The Basney showroom, located at 3820 N. Grape Road, Mishawaka, is open 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
