Yamaha Marine has upgraded its freshwater workhorse 4.2L V MAX SHO with 40 percent more charging power than its predecessor to meet the growing array of technical products reliant on onboard power.

“The newly upgraded 4.2-liter V MAX SHO follows a familiar theme requested by Yamaha customers: make it better, but don’t change it too much,” said Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit president Ben Speciale in a statement. “[And] that extra juice greatly improves the boat’s power margins and gives anglers confidence that the systems on their boat have plenty of power to take them wherever they need to go.”

The engines can also be matched to an optional isolator lead for even more house or trolling battery charging power.

The V6 engine is offered in 200-, 225-, or 250-hp variants and 20- and 25-inch shafts. A new cowling design is also part of the V Max refresh. Yamaha said the engines will be available in May.

Yamaha also added its TotalTilt feature to the SHO series, which allows the engines to go to full tilt up or down with a double tap of trim button; a single tap then stops movement anywhere within the range of motion — particularly useful when trimming up the motor in skinny water or when prepping to trailer the boat.

In addition, Yamaha revealed its Battery Management System that aims to simplify and streamline DC power systems for multiple engine configurations.

Designed for boats with two to five outboards that utilize its Helm Master EX boat control system, BMS will reduce the starting batteries on triple to quint engine configurations to only two, providing charging control of all powerplants. Yamaha said it will be available this summer, with the five-engine version coming in the fall.

Yamaha has also updated its classic and sport analog gauges with four combinations of bezels — chrome in chrome, black or white or black on black; packages will become available next month.
