Ever since Yamaha pulled the plug on R6 in November last year, there have been rumours of a new fully-faired motorcycle joining the lineup. The company has now confirmed that it is working on a new sports bike which will be ready by 2022. Reportedly christened YZF-R7, this bike will be based on MT-07 naked streetfighter. In case you didn't know, MT-07 is a middle-weight naked streetfighter and rivals the likes of Kawasaki Z650, Honda CB650F, etc. It is interesting to note that R7 moniker was previously used by the Japanese motorcycle maker for the racing bike in Superbike World Championship and Suzuki 8 Hours endurance races. Of course, the upcoming R7 will not be as exciting as the racing motorcycle but it will certainly give its rivals a tough competition.
According to some reports, Yamaha started toying with the idea of MT-07 based fully-faired bike even before the R6 was discontinued. It will fill that substantial void that currently exists between R3 and the flagship R1 superbike. The upcoming R7 is expected to borrow a lot from its naked sibling. So, we expect Yamaha to use the same 689 cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine that powers the MT-07 and churns 72 bhp with 67 Nm of peak torque. The sports bike is likely to use the powerplant in the same state of tune, making it less powerful than rivals like Aprilia RS660, Honda CBR650R, and others. But just like MT-07, the R7's highlight will be the riding dynamics and handling rather than outright performance.
The upcoming Yamaha R7 is likely to use the same platform that underpins MT-07. We expect even the suspension and braking setup to be carried forward from MT-07 -- 41 mm KYB inverted forks with damping settings and KYB mono-shock with rebound and spring preload adjustment. The braking hardware, in all likelihood, will include 298 mm front disc brake with 245 mm rear disc brake and dual-channel ABS. Yamaha, however, could equip it with safety provisions like cornering ABS, IMU, multiple riding modes, etc. The new Yamaha R7 will be revealed next year but won't reach our shores anytime soon.
