The Japanese company Yamaha produces Powersport engines that are ranked among the top-performing in the world. Its combustion engines can be found in off-road vehicles, motorcycles, and boats. It even makes motors for sound cards and pianos. But it’s been silent in the electric vehicle market until now.

The company has debuted a new line of electric motors and drive units sized for motorcycles and larger vehicles. The development has been going on quietly for some time now. It began in the motorcycle division and then expanded to electric cars. After realizing how powerful the innovative 200kW (270 horsepower) high-performance electric motor prototype was, Yamaha decided to move on from bikes toward four-wheeled vehicles.

There’s also a 150kW unit designed for full-size electric cars, which it demonstrates in the video below. Shown is a rear-wheel drive electric car powered by two of the 150kW Yamaha electric motors.

Yamaha announced it’s taking orders for the engine. It could be the perfect solution to converting your car into an electric vehicle. The company says it’ll customize the prototype to your specific needs and have it delivered fast. The lowest power version has 35 kW (47 horsepower), and the highest one, for now, is 200kW.

Yamaha engineer Takashi Hara explained:

We developed EV motors first with our motorcycles, and we’ve continued that work and combined the know-how from our engines to create these new units. The 35kW unit was developed for all small mobility applications, including motorcycles. The 150kW unit is for electric car applications.

We thought making the units compact was paramount. Using our casting technology for the housings enables an extremely compact design. This all results in a minimal unit overall.

And that’s an important factor – the size of the motor. The smaller the engine is, the more space there is for other things like a trunk compartment or a bigger battery. So, the fact that Yamaha’s new engine is compact is a big bonus.

Now all Yamaha has to do is connect with big-name car companies like Toyota, Lexus, Subaru, Suzuki, and Mazda – most of which it already has an association. Better sooner than later because it’s going to have to shift into the EV market for good eventually.
