K5 vs. Accord: Family Car Feud
Kia K5
The Kia K5 is a 4-door, 5-passenger refined midsize sedan that features a choice of engines based on trim level. The base engine is a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 cylinder that delivers 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque and offers power in the LX, LXS GT-Line, and EX models, as well as the LXS AWD and GT-Line AWD models.
The engine may seem small on paper, but it manages to deliver the power immediately thanks to its low-end turbocharged torque. Also available is the 2.5-liter turbo of the K5 2.5 GT model. It pushes out 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. Both engines mate to an 8-speed automatic transmission—the GT using a dual-clutch unit. All models except the base are available with all-wheel drive.
The K5 features a robust and angular design outside, including a new fastback silhouette. Inside, there is a well-sorted interior that includes an available 10.25-inch touchscreen display with server-based navigation. All models also come with driver attention warning, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams, and lane-following assist. We wish the blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic avoidance was standard in all trims, particularly because of the large C-pillar.
Honda Accord
Able to accommodate five passengers, the 2021 Honda Accord offers various trim levels that can appeal to nearly every buyer in the segment. There are two engine choices, starting with a base 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder making 192 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. It uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to drive the front wheels. A larger, more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder offers 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Available on the Sport and standard on the Touring, it ditches the CVT in favor of a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The Touring trim also includes the Adaptive Damper System, which improves the Accord’s handling chops but may transmit more road imperfections into the cabin. All Honda Accord models include the Honda Sensing Safety suite of driver aids. The dash features a high-res 8-inch touchscreen display with volume and tuning knobs for added convenience. The new push-button gear selector may be frustrating for some drivers, but they will quickly become second nature. We wish more vehicles offered Walk Away Auto Lock (Sport SE), which makes sure your doors are locked, even if you forgot to do it yourself.
