STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Honda is recalling more than 628,000 vehicles because a fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

According to documents filed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Honda is recalling certain 2019-2020 Acura MDX, MDX Sport Hybrid, RDX, TLX, Honda Accord, Civic Hatchback, Insight; certain 2019 Acura ILX, Honda Accord Hybrid, Civic Coupe, Civic Coupe Si, Civic Sedan, Civic Sedan Si, Civic Type R, Fit, HR-V, Odyssey, Passport, Pilot and Ridgeline -- and some 2018-2019 CR-V vehicles.

Honda is recalling the 628,124 vehicles because the low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.

“The fuel pumps installed in these vehicles may contain defective impellers, which could, over time, result in a loss of engine power or vehicle stalling, potentially increasing the risk of a crash,” Honda said in a statement.

Honda has received no reports of crashes or injuries related to this condition. Dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly free of charge.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified beginning May 18.

Owners of these models can also determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting www.recalls.acura.com or www.recalls.honda.com, or by calling 888-234-2138.

You can check for recalls using your vehicle identification number (VIN), and get a listed recall fixed by calling a local dealership, which will repair your vehicle for free. You can also sign up for NHTSA’s recall alerts about any future recall affecting your vehicle.

RECENT CAR RECALLS

Last month, Kia issued a safety recall for select Model Year 2017-2021 Kia Sportage and Cadenza vehicles due to a risk of engine fire. The recall applies to nearly 400,000 Kia Sportage and Cadenza vehicles from the aforementioned model years that are not equipped with the company’s Smart Cruise Control feature.

In February, Mercedes-Benz recalled more than one million vehicles because it may send inaccurate vehicle location for emergency services, increasing the risk of injury after a crash.

And in January, Ford announced it will recall three million vehicles in the United States and Canada due to a defect in air bags made by the now-bankrupt Japanese manufacturer Takata.

The recalls are due to a design defect, whereby the propellant used in the air bags degrades after long-term exposure to high humidity and temperature cycling. During deployment, this propellant degradation can cause the air bag to over-pressurize, causing sharp metal fragments to penetrate the air bag and enter the vehicle compartment.
