Yamaha develops a compact supercar motor 2021 - NZ Autocar

Yamaha has been producing electric motors for use in e-bikes for years and has also dabbled in the four-wheeler area with various concept sports cars. But it has not yet joined the dots on these two; indeed, it hasn’t yet produced an electric motorcycle, though Yamaha does sell electric bikes in some markets.

Recently the firm announced that it has developed an electric motor with “highest class in output density”. The company is now beginning to accept orders for “commissioned prototype development”.

It has already been producing motors in the range of 35–200kW range for automobile use but now has taken the next step, creating a motor with a maximum output in the 350kW (475hp) class (operating voltage of 800V). It is aimed for use in the high performance EV sector.

The advantages of this latest design are its compact nature and the fact that mechanical and electrical components, like motor, gearbox, speed limiter and even inverter, are all integrated within the single unit. Multiple modules can be installed in a single vehicle; indeed, Yamaha envisions a pair in a sports setting with 700hkW (951hp) on tap.

Why stop there? In the image above, Yamaha has four power units in the same skateboard chassis, a motor at each corner, delivering 1400kW or over 1900hp.

Initially it seems Yamaha will sell the compact powertrain alone, so electric car makers can slot their own chassis and bodyshell over the top. But the fact that it has a skateboard chassis in the works means it might well be able to offer more than just a compact electric powerhouse.

Whether or not Yamaha develops its own battery-powered bike is not yet clear but the fact that it has joined in the swappable battery consortium suggests an inclination in that direction. For all we know, it may well have a zero emissions two-wheeler prototype already undergoing testing.
