Yamaha has been a not-so-secret supplier of engines for various automakers for decades. Some of its most famous “customers” were the 1967 Toyota 2000GT, the Ford Taurus SHO, and the Volvo XC90’s V8 from the mid-2000s. As automakers are making the shift to EVs, so is Yamaha and it’s developed a super-car-motivating electric motor.
Yamaha Hyper EV Motor | Photo: YamahaYamaha’s been working on electric motors for about a year. They’ve created electric motors that produce between 47 and 268 horsepower. The lower output ones are slated for use in personal mobility vehicles such as motorcycles. This latest mill isn’t aimed for “regular” use.
According to Autoblog, these compact 800-volt units produce no less than 496 horsepower. This motor was designed specifically for hypercar applications as, when two motors are assembled on a platform for AWD, total system output closes in on 1,000 horsepower. Another advantage to the units is that they are compact as they feature both the gear and inverter.
The cool part, if you will, is that Yamaha it’s willing to accept commissions to build a prototype using their motor. Given Yamaha’s experience with performance cars such as the Lotus Elise and Lexus LFA, we hope someone gives Yamaha a chance to build a hypercar.
