Yamaha Supports Cleaning Potomac River

Yamaha Rightwaters and the Coastal Conservation Association in Maryland and northern Virginia teamed up on Earth Day last week to clean a section of the Potomac River. Yamaha Rightwaters is a national sustainability program that encompasses Yamaha Marine’s conservation and water quality effort.

Volunteers, including people from Friends of Fletcher’s Cove and the National Capital Chapter of Trout Unlimited, removed debris from Fletcher’s Cove, a popular fishing spot on the Potomac.

“The Potomac is one of the largest rivers on the East Coast … and is the center of many important fishing opportunities,” David Sikorski, executive director of CCA Maryland, said in a statement. “However, the cove is experiencing many issues due to sediment and debris that threaten its continued existence.”

A 1960s infrastructure project has caused silt and run-off to collect in the cove, disrupting the ecosystem. Friends of Fletcher’s Cove is working to restore natural water flow to the area and hope to receive funding from 2020’s federal Great American Outdoors Act.

“For well over a century, Fletcher’s Cove has been the perfect escape from Washington, D.C., without having to leave the city. Unfortunately, without federal intervention, Fletcher’s Cove will eventually become just another local legend,” said John O’Keefe, senior specialist, government relations, Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit.
