Above Average: Spacious interior and cargo accommodations; Honda Sensing safety suite; Honda’s stellar reliability and resale value; hybrid option.
Below Average: Entry-level model lacks basics like Apple CarPlay; limited options in each trim level offer few ways to personalize; low 1,500-pound tow rating.
Consensus: Unchanged for 2021, the Honda CR-V offers legendary Honda reliability and resale value, efficient driving manners, and one of the segment’s roomiest interiors.
2021 Buick Envision
2021 Buick Envision Starting Price $32,995 | Price Yours or View listings near you.
Above Average: All-new for 2021; good safety features; wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Below Average: Single engine choice; no hybrid option.
Consensus: Based on the same chassis as the Cadillac XT4, the 2021 Buick Envision is all-new this year. It gets a longer wheelbase and is slightly wider than it was in 2020. With three different trim levels available, including a new top-of-the-line Avenir model, the Envision offers refined American luxury that impresses.
CR-V vs. Envision: Small, Capable SUVs
Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V is filled with only the best — and it’s one of the best SUVs you can buy. It’s earned the Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award for a number of years, giving it benchmark status. The CR-V delivers with a choice of conventional or hybrid powertrains (the hybrid gets 40 mpg) and stellar reliability and excellent resale value.
The standard CR-V is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with either front- or all-wheel drive and a smooth continuously variable transmission (CVT). The engine makes a commendable 190 horsepower.
The hybrid CR-V uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 2-motor system that combines to make 212 horsepower and offers up to 40 mpg in a package costing only $1,200 more than the conventional powertrain. Moreover, the CR-V Hybrid comes standard with all-wheel drive.
All CR-V models come with the Honda Sensing safety suite that includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assistance, plus auto high beams and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow.
Buick Envision
All-new for 2021, the compact Buick Envision SUV remains a 2-row/5-seat vehicle. It is available in three trims: Preferred, Essence, and the luxurious new Avenir. All are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and a healthy 258 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, and all-wheel drive (AWD) adds only $1,800 to each model’s price. The one transmission available in the 2021 Buick Envision is a 9-speed automatic.
Buick continues to bet big on luxury, and though the top-line Avenir creeps toward the $45,000 mark (which encroaches on Enclave territory in Buick’s lineup), it still feels just as luxurious and refined as its larger, 3-row sibling.
What really makes the Envision shine are its solid chassis, smooth turbocharged engine, and luxury amenities. While some Buick lovers might find the ride a bit firm, our reviewers really loved the Envision’s responsiveness on the road and the active noise-canceling system inside. This feature makes the interior library quiet and ups the luxury quotient.
One thing that does take a bit of getting used to is the haptic feedback driver’s seat, which uses vibration to indicate when you’ve strayed over a lane marking.
Similarities
Available all-wheel drive; five-passenger seating; NHTSA 5-star safety.
Honda CR-V Advantages
Reputation for quality; high resale value; Honda Sensing suite of driver-assists.
2021 Buick Envision Advantages
Tons of luxury amenities; wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard.
