The 2021 Honda HR-V and the 2021 Jeep Renegade are the smallest SUVs from their respective brands. Here’s how they compare.
2021 Honda HR-V
2021 Honda HR-V Starting Price: $21,220 | Price Yours or View listings near you
Above Average: Exceptionally roomy interior; versatile cargo-carrying capability; good gas mileage.
Below Average: Touchscreen infotainment interface; sluggish acceleration; active-safety features not standard on lower trims.
Consensus: With above-average fuel economy and a tempting price, the Honda HR-V is a good value for the buyer on a budget. The CVT transmission is not our favorite, and the HR-V requires lots of engine rpm to climb hills. The flexible interior on this Honda is great for hauling passengers and cargo.
2021 Jeep Renegade
2021 Jeep Renegade Starting Price: $22,850 | Price Yours or View listings near you
Above Average: Trailhawk version’s off-road ability; standard driver-assist features; rugged design; good headroom.
Below Average: Automatic transmission can be hesitant; Trailhawk model can cost more than $35,000; unimpressive fuel economy.
Consensus: The smallest Jeep is a nimble, rugged city car that has some real off-roading potential, particularly in Trailhawk trim. Its size makes it perfect for urban environs, but it’s not a great highway cruiser.
HR-V vs. Renegade: Little SUVs with Big Personality
Honda HR-V
The HR-V is Honda’s smallest and least-expensive SUV. It’s deceptively roomy, particularly its rear seat. Dubbed “Magic Seat” by Honda, its multi-folding capability allows for exceptional cargo-carrying versatility, and it’s standard on all four trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, and EX-L. The sole engine is a 141-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with 127 lb-ft of torque that pairs with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive is standard and AWD optional. The HR-V is not quick, but fuel economy is good: 28/34 mpg city/highway (FWD) and 27/31 mpg (AWD).
Honda’s 7-inch infotainment display is on all but the base LX and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but lacks a tuning knob and menu shortcut buttons. Navigation is not offered. The LX is sparsely equipped; the Sport features unique design elements along and a smattering of additional features.
We recommend the EX or EX-L, which get the HR-V’s bundle of active-safety features known as Honda Sensing that includes forward-collision warning with automatic braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. They also have heated seats, a sunroof, and Honda’s neat LaneWatch, which displays onto the center screen a live feed of the right-side blind-spot zone when the right turn signal is activated.
Jeep Renegade
Despite its compact dimensions, the Renegade’s styling is unmistakably Jeep. The Renegade’s urban-friendly size and short overhangs make this Jeep a respectable city dweller. The lower trims are front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is standard on the upper two and allows the Renegade to cruise through mud and snow.
The Trailhawk gets higher ground clearance and additional off-road features such as a low-range setting, Rock mode, hill-descent control, and skid plates, allowing it to venture further off the beaten path. The base 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine makes a respectable 180 horsepower, but the Renegade is fairly heavy, and acceleration is slow. The 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is no more powerful but makes more torque. Both engines work with a 9-speed automatic than can be hesitant to downshift.
Thick pillars impede visibility for the driver, and cargo space is just average. The Renegade comes in nine different trim levels. Lower grades get a 7-inch touchscreen; upper trims get an 8.4-inch unit, and both have smartphone mirroring.
A robust list of driver-assists is now standard, though the Renegade only earns a 4-star rating from NHTSA, vs. the HR-V’s 5 stars. The top-spec Limited and Trailhawk are pricey for this segment but have lots of features including navigation, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a power driver’s seat, all-wheel drive, and the turbo engine.
2021 Honda HR-V Advantages
Rear seat room; cargo carrying; good reliability; NTHSA 5-star safety; high resale value.
2021 Jeep Renegade Advantages
Trailhawk’s off-road ability; available turbo engine; active-safety features on all trims.
Which One Is Right for Me?
The 2021 Honda HR-V is the perfect urban companion that offers all-wheel drive for those concerned about the weather. The rear Magic Seat adds flexibility to people and cargo hauling in the HR-V unseen in its rivals.
The 2021 Jeep Renegade is the small SUV for those who want a taste of the Jeep lifestyle on a budget. Base models come in front-drive, but to get the most out of Renegade, it’s best to step up to the more off-road-oriented Trailhawk trim level.
