Honda Passport
Half a foot shorter than the 3-row Honda Pilot, the 2-row 2021 Honda Passport nonetheless comfortably seats five. The generous cargo area measures just over 41 cubic feet or nearly 78 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded. The sole engine offered is a 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower, paired with a 9-speed automatic and FWD or AWD. The latter increases towing capacity to 5,000 pounds and gives the Passport higher ground clearance for mud and snow.
Though smooth and capable, the powertrain is not super-economical — EPA combines estimates are 22 mpg (FWD) and 21 mpg (AWD).
Passport trim levels are Sport, EX-L, Touring, and Elite. All include the Honda Sensing suite of safety features that includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are on all but the base version.
The EX-L adds leather, heated seats, and a power liftgate. The Touring brings navigation, heated rear seats, roof rails, parking sensors, and premium audio. The Elite gets ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, and standard AWD. The standard 8-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but lacks a tuning knob.
Nissan Murano
The Nissan Murano is one of the more carlike SUVs. Its premium-feeling cabin has room for five, with ritzy finishes in the top Platinum trim. The high-style exterior stands apart from the SUV norm but impinges somewhat on cargo space, which is less than boxier competitors and hinders visibility.
Available upscale features include a surround-view monitor, a dual-pane sunroof, and quilted leather upholstery. The infotainment system has a modest 8-inch touchscreen but supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; the upper trims get navigation.
All Murano models use a 3.5-liter V6 with 260 horsepower, mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT is better-programmed than most but still isn’t as responsive as a conventional automatic. It is efficient, however, contributing to a 20/28/23 mpg (city/highway/combined) EPA estimates. Those figures are the same with FWD or AWD.
The powertrain delivers decent acceleration but tows only 1,500 pounds. The Murano rides smoothly, just don’t expect engaging handling. All trims come with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. SV and higher grades add adaptive cruise control and parking sensors.
