Honda Pilot
The Honda Pilot seats seven or eight in its three rows, with second-row captain’s chairs restricted to the top trims. Passenger accommodations are roomy, and cargo space ranges from 16.5 cubic feet behind the third row to 82.1–83.9 cubic feet with all seats folded. A 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque is now paired exclusively with a 9-speed automatic. Smooth and sufficiently powerful, this V6 tows up to 5,000 pounds (with AWD). Fuel economy is fairly good with EPA combined estimates of 23 mpg (FWD) and 22 mpg (AWD).
The Pilot is capable and comfortable but not particularly sporty, although handling is secure in part thanks to the AWD system’s torque-vectoring technology. Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control are standard. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert come on all but the base LX.
The base version also skips the 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that is standard on other trims. Leather seating and a power liftgate come with the EX-L. Second-row captain’s chairs become available at the Touring level, along with navigation, rear-seat entertainment, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The top two trims include all-wheel drive, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
Volkswagen Atlas
The Volkswagen Atlas can be built in a few different passenger configurations seating: either 6-passenger-style, with a pair of captain’s chairs in the second row, or a bench seat in that second row to seat seven. The updated front and rear styling make the Atlas look a bit better on the road, and it gets an additional three inches in length. That translates to more interior space for passengers.
As standard, the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas gets a forward-collision warning system, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert on all models. You can choose to outfit your Atlas as an AWD or FWD model and expect to get the same EPA combined fuel rating for 22 mpg.
On the road, the Atlas is comfortable and gives drivers and passengers a commanding view of the road. Since the SUV was built specifically for the American market, interior space abounds, and everything is well thought out in terms of ergonomics.
The base engine is a 235-horsepower 4-cylinder that may seem small for a vehicle weighing in at 4,000 pounds. However, the Atlas gets plenty of oomph thanks to its excellent low-end torque. You can also opt for the 276-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 if you want even more power. Mind you that will mean that your fuel consumption will go up. Like the Pilot, the Atlas is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds.
