Coronavirus India: Yamaha to suspend production

The second wave of coronavirus in India has been wreaking havoc for a while now. It has decidedly wrecked the country's healthcare system. Unfortunately, other industries too have been affected by this surge in COVID infections in the country, just as it was last time. This includes the automotive industry, with an increasing number of automakers suspending production at their manufacturing plants in wake of the second wave. Adding its name to the list now is Yamaha which recently announced the decision to temporarily suspend production operations at all its two plants in India starting from 15 May till 31 May, 2021. The two-wheeler manufacturer operates two facilities in the country -- one in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu and the other in Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The company said an extensive review of the situation led it to the decision in an effort to help break the chain of transmission as well as to support the Indian government's efforts to fight against the deadly virus.

In a statement announcing the decision, Yamaha India Motor said, "Yamaha is fully committed to the health protocols in the wake of the COVID-19 threat. As a responsible corporate, it has updated standard operating procedures for the prevailing second wave with a focus on enhanced health surveillance, expediting vaccinations, regular sanitization at factory premises and workplaces, support to affected employees and their family members, and HR policies that ensures well-being of all the employees."

Yamaha added that the health and safety of its employees remains its top priority and that it will continue to work closely with suppliers as well as dealers to help control how this interruption impacts their operations and concentrate on stock optimisation. As for employees, those working at the corporate office and area offices will work from home to ensure business continuity and ensure provision of support to the company's customers and business partners.
