As prices have continued to edge upward over the past several months, consumers have shown renewed interest in hybrids and other fuel-efficient vehicles produced by Honda that can stretch the mileage in a gallon of fuel.
“Efficiency is always an important consideration for those buying a car,” said Matt LaPrad, a sales consultant at Basney Honda in Mishawaka. “But lately it’s been moving higher on the priority list because there’s some concern that gas prices won’t be going down anytime soon.”
To that end, LaPrad said the dealership has been seeing more consumers trading in their vehicles for Civics, Accords and even small crossovers in the Honda lineup that are capable of squeezing the most out of a gallon of fuel.
“If you have to drive a lot of miles for your job, the savings can really add up in a hurry,” said LaPrad. “And many people can’t afford the high prices and range anxiety that come with owning an electric vehicle.”
The Civic and Accord are virtually neck-to-neck when it comes to competing for the efficiency crown in the Honda lineup with models rated in the low 30-mpg range in city driving and upper 30s and even low 40s in highway driving.
But even the popular HR-V and CR-V crossovers are rated at 30 mpg in combined driving, and Honda is introducing a new Civic sedan in the next couple of months that promises additional gains in fuel economy, LaPrad said.
For those interested in maximizing the number of miles they can get out of a gallon of gas, Honda also offers three hybrids models — the Insight, the Accord and the CR-V — that provide stellar efficiency without sacrificing performance.
With a suggested starting price of just over $23,000, the Insight is rated at 55 mpg in the city and 49 mpg on the highway while offering a combined 151 horsepower and an arsenal of safety and convenience features.
The Accord hybrid starts around $26,500 and is rated at 48 mpg in the city or on the highway while offering 212 net horsepower from its four-cylinder engine and electric motors. With a starting price of just over $30,000, the CR-V is capable of achieving 40 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway with 212 net horsepower.
Though the hybrids can typically match or exceed the performance characteristics of their non-hybrid siblings, they’re also capable of achieving even better efficiency than they’re rated if they’re driven with even acceleration and slow braking to make maximum use of the regenerative brakes, LaPrad said.
Beyond those fuel-efficient choices, Honda is set to release a new Civic sedan later this year that will gain a new look, more features and improved efficiency, and the automaker might be bringing a hybrid-version of the subcompact HR-V crossover to market in the next year or so.
The Basney showroom, located at 3820 N. Grape Road, Mishawaka, is open 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
