CR-V vs. Forester: Families First
Honda CR-V
The secret to the Honda CR-V’s popularity is that it does nearly everything well. A 190-horsepower 1.5-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine hooked to a well-programmed continuously variable transmission (CVT) provides adequate acceleration and good fuel economy: 30 mpg with front-wheel drive and 29 mpg with all-wheel drive (an option on all trims).
You can also choose the CR-V Hybrid with standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and 212 horsepower from its gas-electric powertrain that uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The Hybrid returns 38 mpg and as a bonus is smoother and more refined. Either version offers a pleasant ride and capable handling.
The interior is among the segment’s most spacious, if not the most luxurious. All CR-Vs save for the base trim get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, although more buttons and a tuning knob would be welcome.
All models include the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assist features that includes forward-collision warning with automatic braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise. However, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert aren’t on the base LX.
Subaru Forester
The 2021 Subaru Forester embodies the brand’s ethos. The design is not particularly exciting, but it wraps around a practical interior with plenty of room for people and gear, plus great outward visibility. There’s 35.4 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats, and just over 76 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded.
A 2.5-liter flat (or boxer) 4-cylinder engine paired with a CVT is the sole powertrain. Its 182 horsepower is adequate, but the CVT dulls acceleration response. The Forester’s fuel economy is a respectable 26/33 mpg city/highway.
Standard all-wheel drive, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and an off-road driving mode (except in the base trim) make the Forester capable off-pavement. The Forester also rides comfortably, but the handling is unexciting.
The Forester comes in base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Platinum grades. All include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist, plus adaptive cruise control with lane-centering, and steering-responsive headlights.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic are optional on the Premium and standard on higher trims. Lower trims get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with an 8-inch unit available. Both have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
