Moreno, Lizzie Colson of the University of Maryland, Stony Brook University's Ally Kennedy and Boston College's Charlotte North are the four finalists for the Class of 2021 Honda Sport Award for Lacrosse.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 45 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics." The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2021 Honda Cup, which will be presented on a telecast on CBS Sports Network, on June 28th at 9 pm ET.
The lacrosse finalists were chosen by a panel of coaches and experts representing the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Honda Sport award winner for lacrosse will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
The 2021 ACC Defender of the Year and a Tewaaraton Award finalist, Moreno finished second in the nation in goals against average (6.65) and led her team to its fifth ACC championship and the NCAA Semifinals. She is a two-time ACC Tournament MVP and three-time first-team All-America at goalie. The senior from Huntington, N.Y., ranks second all-time at UNC in wins with a career record of 48-6.
Colson, a redshirt senior from Manchester, Md, was the 2021 Big Ten Defender of the Year and a Tewaaraton Award finalist. She led the nation in caused turnovers (49) which ranks second all-time at Maryland in single season caused turnovers. She earned IWLCA first-team All-Region honors and was named a 20201 Inside Lacrosse first-team All-America.
Kennedy hails from North Babylon, N.Y., and is a three-time America East Midfielder of the Year and a two-time Inside Lacrosse first-team All-America. As the America East Tournament MOP, she set a tournament record with 12 goals in two games and matched a tournament record with seven goals vs. UMBC. She became the third player in program history to score her 200th career goal.
A senior from Dallas, Texas, North was recently named the 2021 Tewaaraton Award winner and led her team to its first-ever NCAA championship. She set a new NCAA DI record in women's and men's lacrosse with 102 goals in 2021 and added 12 assists for 114 points, which ranked second in the nation. As the 2021 NCAA Tournament MVP, she also set an NCAA Tournament record for most goals in a tournament with 31 in 2021.
The CWSA, celebrating its 45th anniversary year, has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs.
