The 2022 season is already in full swing and the possibility of Valentino Rossi retiring at the end of this year is forcing both Yamaha and Petronas to consider a replacement for him, with Raúl Fernandez one of those receiving the most favourable votes.
Rossi has said more than once that if he could not fight for the top spots he would retire. Then he said he would do so if he did not feel competitive. With both factors being a sad reality for the rider, the shadow of retirement looms ever larger in the air.
And in the case of Petronas the plan will be, if Rossi’s farewell is confirmed, to return to what were their original plans: to have young riders in their team and empower them so that they can be an option for the official Yamaha team, as happened with Fabio Quartararo.
The team welcomed Valentino Rossi against his original wishes but are prepared to return to their original plans to take on youngsters, with Raúl Fernandez one of the most favoured names. The Red Bull KTM Ajo youngster is proving to be one of the big surprises in Moto2 and already has some eyes on him as a result of two wins and another three podiums in seven races…. as a rookie.
In Petronas and Yamaha the name of the Spaniard is seen with good eyes, with a huge margin of progression and the ideal candidate for the place of Il Dottor if he hangs up his helmet, as can be read in the Spanish press.
