Yamaha FZ-X vs Hero Xpulse 200T: Which motorcycle should you buy?

Retro styled motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular in India and this is evident by some launches in the recent past like Royal Enfield Meteor 350, Honda H'ness CB350, CB350 RS, and more. The latest retro bike to be launched in India is Yamaha FZ-X that was launched a few days ago and costs ₹1.17 lakh. But in case you want the Bluetooth variant then you will have to spend ₹1.2 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi. The FZ-X is a retro-styled roadster based on 150 cc Yamaha FZ range. It gets retro design elements from the Japanese brand's XSR range along with modern touches like LED headlamp with LED DRL, blacked-out mechanical bits, upswept exhaust, and more. Yamaha FZ-X is a direct rival to Hero Xpulse 200T which is Xpulse 200 adventure bike's tourer variant. But which of these is a better tourer and deserves your money? Let's try to find that out by comparing the two bikes across parameters like performance, suspension setup, features, etc.

Yamaha FZ-X offers 165 mm of ground clearance while Xpulse 200T has a ground clearance of 178 mm, making the latter more capable of negotiating deep potholes and nasty speed breakers. And while FZ-X has a seat height of 810 mm, the Xpulse has 800 mm of seat height, suggesting that both the bikes are easy to ride even for short riders. However, the FZ-X weighs only 139 kg (kerb weight) while the Xpulse 200T is slightly heavier and tips the scale at 154 kg (kerb weight). This difference makes FZ-X more agile and manageable than Xpulse 200T.

Seat height 810 mm 800 mm
Weight (kerb) 139 kg 154 kg

Yamaha FZ-X vs Hero Xpulse 200T: Features

Both the motorcycles get a fully digital instrument panel for readouts like speed, tachometer, trip meter, odometer, fuel gauge, ABS indicator, etc. And both bikes also get Bluetooth connectivity but with different functionalities. The FZ-X gets Bluetooth with Y-Connect smartphone that offers features like call alert, SMS and e-mail notifications, fuel consumption details, Revs dashboard (engine rpm, rate of acceleration, real-time fuel consumption), malfunction notification, battery level, oil-check timing, locate your bike, parking record, riding history, and more. The bike also gets a side-stand engine cutoff that doesn't let the bike start unless the side stand is completely disengaged.

Hero Xpulse 200T's Bluetooth console, on the other hand, offers conveniences like turn-by-turn navigation and call alerts. The Xpulse 200T, sadly, still doesn't have the option of Hero Connect smartphone app that would have placed it on part with the FZ-X.

The FZ-X uses a 149 cc, air-cooled engine making 12 bhp and 13 Nm of peak torque. This engine is paired to a five-speed constant mesh gearbox. Hero XPulse 200T, on the other hand, draws power from a 199.6 cc oil-cooled engine that puts out 18 bhp and 16 Nm. This engine is also available with a five-speed gearbox.

  Engine Gearbox Power Torque
FZ-X 149 cc 5-speed 12 bhp 13.3 Nm
Xpulse 200T 199.6 cc 5-speed 18 bhp 16 Nm

These specifications reveal that Xpulse 200T is more powerful than the FZ-X. However, Hero tourer's power advantage is expected to be marginally offset because of the weight difference between Xpulse 200T and Yamaha FZ-X.

Yamaha FZ-X makes use of 41 mm telescopic forks with seven-step adjustable mono-shock while the braking duties are tended to by 282 mm front disc brake and 220 mm rear disc brake with single-channel ABS. The Xpulse 200T, on the other hand, uses 37 mm telescopic forks with a seven-step adjustable mono-shock and the braking hardware comprises 276 mm front and 220 mm rear disc brakes with single-channel ABS.

These details reveal that the FZ-X has superior suspension and braking hardware as compared to Hero Xpulse 200T.

The FZ-X starts at ₹1.17 lakh for the base variant while the Bluetooth model gets a price tag of ₹1.2 lakh. Hero Xpulse 200T, in comparison to this, costs ₹1.16 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.

  Price (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Yamaha FZ-X ₹1.17 lakh to ₹1.2 lakh
